We all knew it was coming, but Ubisoft finally confirmed The Division 2 is in development.

Today, Julian Gerighty, the Creative Director of Massive Entertainment — the developer behind The Division— revealed that the team was working on The Division 2. Publisher Ubisoft accidentally leaked the German version of the press release early, but later confirmed the existence of the game in a Twitch livestream.

Gerighty wrote the following in a statement issued to fans of the franchise.

When we started working on The Division, it was immediately clear to us that we had something very special here and something we really wanted to do right from the start… when we released our game in 2016, it was clear to us that it was only the opening chapter of a much bigger saga, and so we're excited to share more with you today about what awaits you in The Division Universe next.

We are very pleased to announce that we are currently working on... The Division 2. The development is led by Massive… and driven by close collaboration with Ubisoft Annecy, Redstorm, Reflections, Ubisoft Bucharest, and Ubisoft Shanghai. The Division 2 will be based on an updated version of the Snowdrop Engine that will help us realize our ambitions for this title.

The Division... will support… an Xbox One X update that will rediscover the beautiful and emblematic New York City with all its stunning details in both 4K and 1080p.

More details about The Division 2 will be unveiled at E3 2018. It's unclear when the Xbox One X patch for the original game will hit, but it should support two modes. It's unclear if the 1080p mode will simply offer advanced visuals effects or a higher 60 FPS frame rate. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know more about the game. Until then, be sure to check out the first title if you like third-person multiplayer experiences.

The Division 2 should be available on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4.
