Xbox and PC ARPG 'The Surge 2' set to arrive in 2019

After the success of The Surge, Deck 13 and Focus Home Interactive are partnering up again for a sequel.

When The Surge launched in May 2017 on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4, the title garnered surprisingly positive reviews from critics and gamers alike. While gameplay was similar to the Dark Souls action role-playing (ARPG) series, it was much more accessible. The focus on severing body parts from enemies and equipping them was definitely a first for the genre.

Today, taking into account the success of The Surge, Deck 13 and Focus Home Interactive announced the renewal of their partnership and the development of The Surge 2. The sequel is planned for launch on PC and consoles in 2019. According to the team, The Surge 2 keeps the hardcore limb-targeting combat system, but greatly enhances the environment.

The Surge mostly took place in claustrophobic corridors, and even the theme park expansion didn't feel as open as it should have. The Surge 2 transports players to a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design.

The developer also noted that the combat is more brutal than ever, with even more options in the limb-targeting system. As expected, there will also be more abilities, weapons, implants and drones. This should give players more freedom when it comes to choosing a playstyle.

Hopefully The Surge 2 will be a stellar experience when it launches next year. In the meantime, if you haven't played the original, be sure to check it out at retailers. The game features Xbox One X support and a 1080p 60 FPS option.
