Today, Warhorse Studios and Deep Silver released a new story trailer for the upcoming medieval role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an upcoming medieval role-playing game set to launch on February 13, 2018 on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4. Contrary to its open nature, the game is story-driven and immerses you in an epic adventure in the Holy Roman Empire. You get to explore majestic castles, deep forests, thriving villages, and countless other real-life places in medieval Bohemia.
Set in 1403, you play as Henry, a humble blacksmith's son, who winds up in not-so-humble circumstances. The game starts off in a fairly benign way, where you resolve village disputes, learn your father's craft, and play real dice games from the time period. The opening is quite deceptive because Henry's simple life is disrupted in a severe way and the adventure begins from there. You will eventually find yourself taking part in large scale battles, and helping solve a political crisis that threatens all of Bohemia.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance begins rather tragically because you have to avenge your parents' death. While that may be the main quest, there are much larger forces at play. The game features tense battles, game-changing quests, and the ability to dramatically impact the world by making certain choices. The story trailer captures some of the events that unfold during the campaign.
Usually when you play open world games, the character can make many decisions for himself. For example, in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the protagonist calls the shots because there's no chain of command. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance, you have to constantly think about what your commanding officer will say or how others will be affected by your decision. While this may seem restrictive, it definitely adds to the realism. Even back then, soldiers couldn't go around doing what they wanted, they had to follow certain procedure.
According to the developer, to survive fights in a country which is torn apart internally and invaded by foreign forces, evening the odds is important when rushing into a battle. Fighting one bandit instead of taking on a dozen is probably a realistic approach to combat. This isn't The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim where you can take on an army with your voice.
Hopefully when Kingdom Come: Deliverance launches this month, it'll be a polished experience even on consoles. The developer confirmed that the game will support Xbox One X when it comes out. The title will run at 1440p on Xbox One X and 1080p on PlayStation 4 Pro. Unfortunately, both versions will lack HDR support because the game wasn't developed with that in mind.
