PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds to run at 60 FPS on Xbox One X

When it comes to competitive multiplayer experience, frame rate is just as important as resolution because it makes the controls feel tighter and more responsive.

However, in a highly visual game like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, even resolution is important because it's all about spotting your opponent from far away. Not only is the Xbox One X version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds going to feature a higher resolution than the standard Xbox One, but it might also feature a higher frame rate if the developers aren't able to get it running at 60 FPS on the base unit. All of this information and more was revealed during an interview between GamesTM and the game's developers. WCCFtech compiled their responses.

Definitely on Xbox One X, 60 FPS. On Xbox One, we're not sure. We may have to limit it at 30 FPS, maybe, but the last time I saw it, it was running at about 30 to 40. We're still constantly improving it so, you know, the aim is to get to 60. That's why we're doing Game Preview, because I think the great thing about console is it's a locked hardware system, so we can do really specific tweaks that tune it for those systems... I have great faith that we'll get there. The great thing about Battlegrounds is that it's not…unlike the more high paced shooters, frame rate isn't that important. Yes, it is important, but it's not as important for us as it is in a twitch shooter.

Hopefully the base Xbox One game will manage to hit 60 FPS too. However, only time will tell. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is all about spotting your enemy and taking them out before they get a chance to do the same. Even if one version ends up being 30 FPS and the other 60 FPS, it should still be a comparable experience. The difference in resolution might end up being the real differentiating factor here because at 4K you might be able see everything clearly and even spot an enemy's piece of clothing or weapon in the bushes.

It's not all good news though, even though the game is getting a frame rate and resolution boost on Xbox One X, it won't feature 4K textures. This isn't because the developers don't want to add them to the game, but because they don't exist yet. Bluehole confirmed that 4K textures require a lot of work and that's a long-term goal. The good news is that the Xbox One S and Xbox One X versions of the game support HDR so it should look vibrant.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a last-man-standing shooter being developed with the help of community feedback. Starting with absolutely nothing, players must fight to locate weapons and supplies in a battle to be the only one alive. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a surprisingly realistic and high-tension title set on a massive island. The game is available now on Windows PC and will hit the Xbox Game Preview program on December 12, 2017.
