Spider-Man Unlimited on Lumia 1520

Spider-Man Unlimited is the latest endless runner from mobile gaming giant Gameloft. The game's premise involves Spider-Men and villains from various universes converging into a single universe. With slick production values and dozens of different Spider-Men to collect, Unlimited is a real treat for fans of the web-slinger.

Want to get ahead on the Spider-Man Unlimited leaderboards and fill out your roster with Spidey's coolest costumes? Our latest tips and tricks guide will teach you the best ways to spend your time and energy while thwarting the plans of the Sinister Six.

1. Prioritize combos during Event and Unlimited runs

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

When you're playing Issues – the story mode – you don't have to worry about combos or score. Just focus on staying alive and completing the level goal.

But during Events and Unlimited Mode, scoring is the number one priority. You'll want to achieve as many combos as possible in order to get a high score. The best way to start or continue a combo is by punching or kicking an enemy. Each one adds to your combo and keeps the combo going for a little longer.

Going through rings also adds to your combo. These mostly show up during web-slinging, climbing, and free-falling sequences. Combos are more important than vials, so aim for rings first during those sequences.

2. Only use ISO-8 to continue on high-scoring Event and Unlimited runs

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

The temptation to spend ISO-8 (premium currency) to continue when you die is great. But you really need that ISO-8 for other things. Still, there are times when it makes sense to burn a few chunks of the element on a continue. The first continue costs one ISO-8, the second costs two, and the third and final continue costs four.

Events and Unlimited Mode both offer rewards for top leaderboard slots. Continuing in order to achieve a higher leaderboard bracket makes sense, as the rewards can sometimes be greater than the cost of the continues. Try to get a feel for your average maximum score, and only continue if you have reached or exceeded that maximum. Even then, you might not want to continue if you're likely to die right away after continuing.

3. Make lots of friends to boost your energy supply

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

Spider-Man Unlimited's energy system is a drag. It costs one unit of energy to play any mode, and it takes ten minutes to regenerate that one energy. Players can store a maximum of five energy units. Energy refills cost three ISO-8s.

Luckily, you can bolster your energy supply by making friends. Every day, players can send and receive one free unit of energy to each individual friend. The more friends you have, the more energy you'll receive as a result. You don't need to know the people you're friending. Just look at the leaderboard spaces above you and send requests to your fellow active players.

Remember that five is your maximum quantity of energy. If your energy is full and someone sends you an energy gift, just leave that gift in your inbox until you've spend your current supply.

4. Buy the right Power-up upgrades from the shop

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

It's tempting to spend vials on new Spider-Men, but don't do that very often. You're likely to get doubles, which offer very little benefit for the cost.

Instead, head to the Shop and invest in Power-up upgrades. The higher you level up a power-up, the longer that item will last when you pick one up during a run. The first upgrade costs 5,000 vials, with subsequent upgrades rising in price.

Focus on the power-ups that increase Spider-man's lifespan, not his scoring potential. That means Web Hammer and Web Shield upgrades come first. Web Hammer is more effective because it knocks out enemies automatically, works on obstacles, and won't go away until its timer expires. Web Shield will only protect you from a single hit, but its timer lasts much longer.

5. Purchase extra character slots when you can

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

Players start out with six character slots, which seems like a lot early on. But over time you'll acquire far more than six characters. If you don't have a lot to hold a new character, that Spider-Man will go to waste. So make sure to buy more slots in-between power-up upgrades.

The initial batch of slots cost vials, with each additional one going up in price. Eventually they will start costing ISO-8. The do get costly, but they're important.

6. Spend time with the Events and Unlimited mode to get more characters and currency

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

As mentioned earlier, Events and Unlimited Mode provide rewards based on leaderboard position. Unlimited Mode doles out either ISO-8 or premium characters every day, in fact.

Events pay out not only for leaderboards, but also reaching specific milestones like distance travelled or vials collected. Focus on reaching these milestones after you've achieved a good Unlimited score for the day.

7. Use Spidey Ops to boost your team's experience

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

Initially you can only play with one Spider-man at a time, which means the rest of your team will go to waste as you play. But you can still make use of your remaining crew by sending them out on Spidey Ops missions from the My Team menu.

Up to six teammates can go on a Spidey Ops mission at one time. The more you send, the likelier the mission is to succeed. Each member will receive experience and vials after the mission ends.

Beat Issue 1 to unlock the second tier of Spidey Ops missions. These pay better than the first tier, but they often take longer as well.

8. Save your ISO-8 for ranking up your top Spider-Men

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

ISO-8 serves many important purposes. Naturally you'll want to use it to buy a premium character or two. But you should probably save the rest for rank-ups after that.

Each Spider-Man has a level cap based on his current number of stars (rank). The higher the Spidey's level, the higher his score multiplier. Even a premium Spider-man won't do you much good on the leaderboards if he only has one star.

Hence, you'll want to choose one or two Spideys and increase their ranks as much as possible. Standard Spider-Man can be ranked up to three stars somewhat affordably, but it costs a whole lot of ISO-8 to take a rare or super-rare Spider-Man up through the ranks. Save up your ISO-8 and get those ranks up if you want your Spider-men to be able to reap high scores and play level-locked story levels.

9. Only use Spider-Men to level up other Spider-Men when your team gets full

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

What do you do when you need room for another character and you can't afford more slots? Get rid of doubles and dead weight by using them to level up other Spider-Men.

Leveling up a character through the My Team menu requires at least one character to sacrifice, as well as a small sum of vials. Sacrificing multiple characters won't increase the vial cost, so it's best to burn multiple characters at once if you have them to spare.

Leveling up characters in this way is not a better source of experience than simply playing with them. Just use it to get rid of excess characters.

10. Keep at least one of every Spider-Man when possible

Even one you have a really strong rare Spider-Man, it's still a good idea to hold on to low-tier characters. Some story missions require a specific character to play. You don't have to play these missions in order to complete an issue, but they offer good rewards.

More importantly, Events will often pay a score bonus for using specific characters. Even if they don't, you might reach milestones more easily with certain characters' abilities. So keep one of everybody on-hand if you have room.

Bonus tip: Complete Issues to boost your scoring potential

Top 10 Spider-Man Unlimited Tips and Tricks

Issues are Spider-Man Unlimited's story maps. Completing levels in an issue will get you experience and ISO-8. But playing issues uses energy that you could be spending towards reaching Event milestones, making it tough to choose Story over the promise of those time-limited rewards.

Still, you'll want to clear the first issue as soon as you can. Not only does beating an issue unlock new Spidey Ops missions, it also unlocks the ability to take an extra Spidey along on missions. Equipping two Spideys will combine their score multipliers and abilities. You'll have a much easier time climbing the leaderboards with those bonuses.

xbox one controller

Microsoft will give Windows PC games a new gamepad option in November when it launches the Xbox One Controller + Cable for Windows for the price of $59.99.

The actual design of the controller is the same as the one that Microsoft made for the wireless Xbox One version when it launched in November. It can also be used on the Xbox One, both in wired and wireless mode.

The main difference is that the Windows version comes with a nine foot long USB cable so it can connect to a PC; sorry, there's no PC wireless support for this gamepad. The controller supports Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. If you are a hardcore PC gamer, will you be getting the Xbox One controller for Windows?

Pig Jump, simple and challenging endless runner game with potential

Pig Jump

Pig Jump is yet another endless runner styled Windows Phone game that has you jumping a pig across a river that is full of hungry crocodiles, dangerous buzzards and other perils.

To help with the chances of survival, the pig is armed with a bazooka, with an unlimited supply of ammo, that he can use to blast away the dangers the river may offer. Graphics are decent, game controls simple and Pigs Jump is available for low-memory devices. While Pig Jump isn't a terrible game to pass the time with and has slight potential. I'm just not sure it is strong enough to be a "go to" game.

Pig Jump Menu

Okay, your main menu for Pig Jump is brief with options to mute the sound and music, visit the developer's Facebook and Twitter page, view the About scree and jump into game play.

The goal of Pig Jump is to guide your pig across a river by jumping from stepping-stone, floating boulder and other platforms. You have coins to collect along the way and dangers to avoid.

Game Controls

Game controls are simple. Tap the screen to fire your bazooka and with your pig already jumping when you launch the game, you use your tilt controls to move your pig forward. While you do have an unlimited supply of rockets to shoot, be careful not to shoot too wildly. Your shot accuracy will effect your final score.

Pig Jump Game Play

Dangers include crocodiles and piranhas that jump up from the water and buzzards in the air. Your pig is armed with a rocket-firing bazooka to help take out the buzzards and you will have to rely on the timing of your jump to avoid the water dangers. You can also blast the fish out of the sky as they jump out of the water as well. Miss a jump and hit the water, get hit by a buzzard or let a croc or fish take a bite out of you and the game ends.

Overall Impression

Pig Jump has decent graphics and game play will challenge your skills of timing and patience. It's one of those games that are nice to have in your gaming library to play every once in a while. I just don't see the game pulling you in as a daily gaming staple.

Coins are only used to determine your final score along with your distance and shot accuracy. The game could use a few power-ups that can be collected or bought using the coins collected. A few more enemies wouldn't hurt either.

Pig Jump knocks down a 4 Star rating in the Windows Phone Store that we think is slightly on the high side. The game has potential but just needs a little more gusto to become more appealing.

Age of Empires: Castle Siege with Xbox LIVE now available for Windows Phone, Tablet, and PC

$

Do you remember the good old days when Xbox LIVE games for Windows Phone came at a steady clip every Wednesday? It almost seems like Microsoft is getting back into the swing of things, with not only more releases, but also the universal app kind. These are the ones where developers can code for one, but get two apps for Phone and Windows for users.

It is no secret that Age of Empires: Castle Siege is coming to Microsoft's platform, but today you can finally download both for your Phone and PC, and even get that coveted Xbox LIVE integration.

Back on September 9, AoE beta was spotted in the Windows Phone store, but it was unable to be downloaded. If you were able to get that game, you might want to delete it as it is no longer the official link, which is found below for all users.

In our exclusive interview with Smoking Gun CEO about the mechanics of AoE: Castle Siege, John Johnson described it like this:

"AoE: Castle Siege brings AoE gameplay to touch devices. We've kept a lot of what made the original AoE so popular: We're grounded in history, you can play one of 6 civilizations and each have 3 unique heroes and 1 unique troop type. You can directly control all the units during combat just like other RTS titles. We have a tech tree to advance through as well as many ages to advance through that all gain better weapons, units, defenses and other structures. And as with AoE, the game is primarily about advancement and combat."

AoE indeed looks intense, and more importantly, it is designed for touch and mobile game play. With single-sign on through a Microsoft Account and your games should be able to sync between your phone, PC or Surface. This syncing ability makes campaigns much more attractive, and you are likely to play AoE for longer periods.

From the Store description:

"Age of Empires®: Castle Siege invites you to guide your empire through the Medieval Era on your Windows PC or touch screen device. Choose from one of several civilizations, including the Britons, Teutons, and Kievan Rus. Upgrade your keep, fortify your walls, and garrison defensive troops to protect yourself from marauders. Then, train an army to raid other cities, and command them in battle to dismantle your opponents' defenses."

Sounds like a big game to us and a worthy title to download. For Phone, the Age of Empires weighs in at a hefty 169 MB in size, but it is available for 512 MB devices, if you can believe it. For Windows, you are looking at double the graphics, double the fun so 320 MB should do it. Both titles are free.

Download both, play both and go forth and conquer! (Note: if the Windows 8 link returns an error, do a search in the Store instead)

Thanks, Jason L., for the tip!

Destiny generates $325 million in total sales in first five days

destiny

Activision revealed today that sales of Destiny, the long awaited new sci-fi shooter from Halo's original development team Bungie, have totaled $325 million in its first five days worldwide.

Destiny first went on sale on September 9 and later that week Activision said that it sold $500 million worth of the game to retailers, so a sell-through of $325 million in its first five days is pretty solid, especially for a new IP. Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing, is quoted as saying, "Destiny fans played more than 100 million hours of the game in the first week. That's on par with the engagement levels of our most popular Call of Duty games, which obviously is an industry leader."

There's no word yet on the breakdown of how many copies of the game were sold for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles. While Activision and Bungie made agreements with Sony to promote Destiny heavily on the PlayStation platforms, Microsoft has also put a lot of effort into marketing Destiny as well, to tap into Bungie's previous fan base for the Halo games.

If you have played Destiny, what is your opinion on Bungie's latest game?

Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One review – A cheap and essential accessory for many users

Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One review

Earlier this week we published a list of must-have accessories for Xbox One. Among those is the Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One from PDP. The mount not only positions the Kinect motion control accessory above a television, it also offers a privacy cover for the Kinect camera. Maybe you do things in front of your TV that you don't want Microsoft to see; we're not here to judge.

Having already recommended the Kinect TV Mount, it's high time that we give the Xbox One accessory a proper review. Will the mount take your Kinect experience to the next level, or will it snap apart during the set-up process? Read on and check out our hands-on video for the full word!

Give me some privacy

Open up PDP's Kinect Mount box and you'll find two simple components: the mount itself and the privacy cover. The box also contains a large instruction sheet in several languages.

Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One review

Before we analyze the mount, let's look at the privacy cover. The cover is basically a hollow rectangular matte black piece of plastic. One side of the cover is longer than the others, allowing it to fully cover the camera array on the Kinect.

Just slide the cover onto the left side of the Kinect and it will sit securely on the device. It comes right off too. The mount does not provide a method to store the cover when not in use.

Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One review

Arm wrestling with the mount

The mount itself is sort of a triangular array of glossy black plastic.

The first step in setting it up involves pulling down the back arm which will rest behind your television. This arm is my least favorite aspect of the product. When pulled, the arm doesn't want to come down. Pull long and hard enough and it will start coming out in steps, making loud clicks. Because it's so tight, I had trouble telling when the thing had fully opened.

At every step during this process, I feared that I would break the arm. I understand that it needs to be tight enough to grip the television, but still. There needs to be a way to loosen the arm temporarily and to tell when it has fully extended.

Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One review

Adjusting the mount and attaching the Kinect

Having extended the back arm, you'll want to test the mount's fit with your television. If you have a thicker flatscreen TV, the mount will require a bit of adjustment. Squeeze the two tabs on the main body of the mount and the back arm will extend outward.

Even having done so, I think my ~6 year-old television is slightly thicker than intended for the mount. But it does sit on my TV, and it wouldn't fall off unless somebody pushed or pulled on it.

Actually connecting the Kinect to the mount is easy. Remove the mount from the TV and place the bottom of the Kinect on the mounting screw. The Kinect fits onto the device perfectly, so alignment won't be an issue. Then look under the mount for the mounting screw wheel. Turn it clockwise and it should screw in, holding the Kinect securely in place.

Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One review

Overall Impression

Having installed the Kinect and mount on your TV, you might need to adjust the tilt of the Kinect. Go into the system settings and adjust it from there. The result has been a big improvement for me. The Kinect can now see the user's legs as intended - perfect for games like Dance Central Spotlight and Just Dance 2015!

Mounting the Kinect atop your TV will generally give it a better field of vision than below. Some users have even reported better accuracy with voice commands by distancing the Kinect from the television speakers. Also, who wants to have their Kinect sitting around taking up shelf space down below? Not me.

The Kinect TV Mount for Xbox One has a few issues like the difficult-to-open back arm. But it's the only game in town as far as Xbox One Kinect mounts go (unless you choose to use a camera tripod instead of a mount). At a retail price of $19.99, it won't break the bank, either. If you're looking for a new place to put your Kinect, give PDP's mount a try. Amazon currently has the product on sale a few bucks below retail, so now's a great time to order.

Microsoft thinking about porting Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach to Xbox One

Halo reach

Microsoft and its in-house game development studio 343 Industries are thinking about bringing two more Halo games made originally for the Xbox 360, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach, to the Xbox One.

Microsoft will be bringing Halo 1-4 to the Xbox One in the form of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, in November. But Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach, both originally developed by Bungie, did not have Master Chief as the main character. There was also another reason, according to what 343 Industries executive producer Dan Ayoub told Videogamer.com: "Quite honestly, the other part of it was just disc space. We're squeezing everything we can out of the available space for this thing."

However, those two games might show up on the Xbox One one day. Ayoub stated:

"What I can tell you is probably the biggest question we get from people is, what about ODST and Reach. What I can say is it's certainly not in our development timeline or planning right now [but] we've heard that question so much that it has seeped into our collective subconscious. I think enough people have asked about it that we are thinking about it."

Would you like to see those two classic Xbox 360 games come to the Xbox One?

Assassin's Creed Pirates makes its way back to the Windows Phone Store [Update: for just $1.99]

Assassin's Creed Pirates

Last month Assassin's Creed Pirates was released for both Windows Phone and Windows 8 devices. Shortly afterwards, the Windows Phone version was pulled from the Store due to widespread crashes and errors.

The developers over at Ubisoft have apparently patched things up and AC Pirates is once again available in the Windows Phone Store.

The game has you playing the role of young captain Alonzo Batilla as he sails the Caribbean, breaking all the rules, challenging empires and building his own personal fortune.

Unfortunately, the re-release fails to add a trial version to AC Pirates with the full version (not available for low-memory devices) running $4.49. You also have a Windows 8 version that will also cost you $4.49 (not universal).

We'll try to get a full review up on the Windows Phone version shortly but in the meantime, you can catch Paul Acevedo's thoughts on the Windows 8 version of the game here.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips!

Update: The two games appear to be on sale with the Windows Store stating this deal will last seven more days.

Interview – WayForward deep-dishes on 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze'

Interview – WayForward on TMNT: Danger of the Ooze for Xbox

Earlier this month, Activision announced a new Ninja Turtles game for Xbox 360 and other consoles called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze. The game will be a single-player exploration-based action platformer, and comes from fan favorite developer WayForward Technologies.

As a lifelong Turtles fan, I was thrilled to see the license paired up with a skilled developer like Wayforward. We promised some special coverage of the game would be forthcoming, so here it is: our exclusive interview with Tomm Hulett of WayForward and Director of Danger of the Ooze. Read on to learn how the game will play, what Turtles touches it will feature, and lots more!

Tomm and WayForward

Tomm Hulett WayForward Interview

Hey Tomm! Please tell us a little about what you do when you're not making games.

When I'm not making games I'm probably playing them. Otherwise I'm watching movies with my family, playing with pets, or reading. I should probably get out more. I really like hiking but don't have many opportunities to do it. I'm also at Disneyland a lot but I'd classify that as playing games; you can learn a lot about game design by exploring Disneyland.

How did you end up at WayForward?

I made friends with WayForward while working at Konami, where I Produced Contra 4! We kept in touch throughout the years and I worked with them again on Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Working together several times, it became clear that my Design approach was in line with WayForward's ideals. So when they had a Director position open, it made sense to join forces and become a super team!

Licensed games on the whole tend to be low-quality, selling primarily to consumers who don't know any better. Yet WayForward has turned out some memorable games based on shows and movies, such as Ducktales and Batman: the Brave and the Bold. How do you manage to maintain quality despite the development challenges of licensed games?

The short answer is that we at WayForward approach licensed games from the specific idea that every game is somebody's first game. So we aren't just ambassadors of TMNT, we're also ambassadors of video games as a medium. We take that mission seriously and strive to put as much passion and care into our licensed games as we would into our original creations.

As far as the more detailed answer, I think a lot of it comes down to proper scoping. There's a real temptation to design as much content as humanly possible, and then you get halfway through your schedule and you realize it's impossible to finish – so the end product is rushed and kind of haphazardly assembled.

At WayForward, we're pretty good at realizing how big a game we can make, designing to fit that, and then executing it efficiently so things come together relatively smoothly. That makes a big difference, since most licensed games have to hit a movie release window, the start of a TV season, etc. Every second counts in a schedule like that.

Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero

WayForward also creates original titles like the upcoming Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for Xbox One, 360, and other platforms. But the vast majority of your original games are unavailable on Xbox consoles. With the advent of the ID@Xbox program, might we start seeing more fresh WayForward games on the Xbox One?

We'd love to expand to other platforms. Obviously Half-Genie Hero is our first title on the newest consoles, but we're always interested in spreading the WayForward love to new audiences if the right opportunity arises.

The Ninja Turtles and their show

Now about those Turtles. Do you have any personal history with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

I was a huuuuuge TMNT fan growing up, and I guess that never really goes away. Like every human being my age, I was obsessed with the eighties cartoon series and the toys. I also somehow snowed my parents into buying me an Eastman and Laird's TMNT omnibus that they didn't think to examine for content at the time. I even had a pet rat named Splinter!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES game

What I remember most fondly about the franchise, though, is Konami's first two videogames. The NES Turtles game was probably the first licensed game most of us played. Maybe it wasn't the best, but we loved it so much despite that.

Of course, the arcade game was amazing. My friends and I spent so much time talking about (and playing) those two games… I'd be thrilled if modern kids talked about our new game in a similar fashion. Fingers crossed.

But! To read between the lines and answer your implied question: Raphael is my favorite. (That was the first question we asked people as they joined the team. Mikey emerged as the winner by quite a margin.)

Nick Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Mikey is my favorite too, but Raph is no slouch. Anyway, the current Nickelodeon TV series on which Danger of the Ooze is based has inspired enthusiasm among not just kids but also older viewers as well. What do you think makes Nick's incarnation of the Turtles so special?

Because it's so good!

The current show reminds me of Batman: The Animated Series in the way it collects years and years of history, across many different incarnations, and boils it down to the essence of the property. They really capture the "fun" of TMNT without sacrificing the cool ninja stuff, or how scary Shredder can be… but then you still have a mutant fly man.

Honestly the entire team was skeptical because we hadn't seen the new show when the project started – but we all fell in love with it immediately. We'd get together each week to watch new episodes, then work overtime to add in references to keep the game current and exciting.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze logo

Danger of the Ooze bridges the gap between seasons 2 and 3 of the Nick show. Are you connecting specific story points between those seasons, or is the bridge more that the game takes place with the characters in the same state as when season 2 ends?

I'd say it's closer to the latter. The game's not really a "missing link" per se – but if you've seen all the episodes you'll understand where we fit in. It's something that happened off camera.

Works for me. And how much story content will be in the game? Will there be any voice acting, in or out of the story sequences?

There is so much voice acting! It was great being able to work with amazing actors like Rob Paulsen (Donatello in Nick's cartoon and Raphael in the original show) and Mae Whitman (April O'Neil in Nick's show)…

As for story – we really wanted to preserve some of the genre feel, where the story unfolds contextually as you play the game. But TMNT has a ton of great, colorful characters and that's a really important part of the brand too… so most of our story unfolds when you encounter a boss or an NPC. Those moments let us have a lot of fun with characters that fans love. However, when you're actively exploring the city and immersed in gameplay, we won't be interrupting you with radio calls or anything.

That said, the Turtles love to wisecrack as they fight in the show (and comics) and that is an element we've kept as well. There's plenty of banter as you fight!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze

Danger of the Ooze is a single-player game in which players can swap between the four Turtles, not unlike the original NES game. Can you give us an example of how one Turtle's abilities differ from another's? And do the inactive Turtles recover life when not in use?

I thought it was really important to let players use their favorite Turtle exclusively (if they want), so you'll never encounter, say, a pit that you need Donnie to vault over. However, every Turtle has his own unique rhythm. Raph and Mikey have 3-strike combos while Leo and Donnie only have two, but the former pair has much shorter range. Each turtle also has his own specialty just to keep things interesting. Mikey can jump higher, Raph throws Shuriken faster, Donnie can block more easily, and Leo's counterattacks are the best.

Something that always frustrated me about the NES game was that Donnie was clearly the best—it was no contest. Best range AND best damage? Come on. This might just be jealousy because Raph was clearly the worst in that game, but I didn't want kids today to have the same experience. If I love Leo in the show, I want to love him in the game too. So we spent a lot of time trying to get it right. They all have their advantages.

Inactive Turtles don't regenerate health, but we do have a cool mechanic for when a Turtle is defeated. When this occurs, that Turtle is Captured, and taken out of the active roster. But, if you can locate where in the city he's been stashed and rescue him, he'll be back on the team and ready for action again. This means you essentially have unlimited lives, but if you aren't careful your favorite Turtle could be out of commission for a while. There's an upgrade that allows you to hone in on captured Turtles, so players will definitely want to track that down.

Nick Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

You mentioned Mae Whitman earlier. I take it the Turtles' allies April O'Neil and Casey Jones appear in the game? What role do they play?

Yes, [they are two of the] several NPC characters you'll encounter throughout the game. They primarily serve to teach the Turtles new techniques or impart different abilities. They may even have different messages depending on which Turtle you're controlling when you encounter them.

Can you go into a little detail about the game's combat mechanics?

One of my favorite parts of the Batman Arkham franchise is how you really feel like Batman when you play. In combat you don't need to "earn" your Batman-ness. You just feel Batmannish when you play. I wanted to accomplish that with TMNT – so the player really gets into the shell of their Turtle. Combat is a crucial part of that.

So every Turtle has his melee combo which is controlled by a single button. If they hold it down at the end of their combo, the Turtle will spin his weapons (a flourish seen frequently in the show). At this point, the player can perform a Shell Kicker by pressing one of the four cardinal directions. The four Shell Kickers each do something different – for example, forward SKs will knock enemies forward into other enemies. Downward SKs hit really hard and can break through an enemy's guard.

The player gains XP by defeating enemies, and this can be used to level up Shell Kickers so they're even more impressive and have additional effects. But there might be advantages to sneaking around your enemies too… if you defeat one without being noticed, it has a higher chance of dropping pickups.

In addition to the main attacks and Shell Kickers, the Turtles will find/learn various attacks, from Shuriken to Special Moves and navigational abilities.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze

Danger of the Ooze will feature an "interconnected non-linear game world." Does that mean it plays like what we think of as a Metroidvania game?

That's right, TMNT:DotO is an exploration-based action platformer. I've always wanted to create a game in this genre set in a modern city, so when Activision told us they were thinking about going this direction for TMNT, I felt incredibly fortunate. A great genre, in a setting I've wanted to explore, with a franchise I grew up with? Where do I sign? We certainly strove to do the concept justice.

We really tried to stick with the approach where most of your power-ups increase both your offensive capabilities and your navigation options. A good example of this is the Smoke Bomb. Not only will it teleport you instantly out of harm's way and stun nearby enemies, but it can also be used to reach higher areas or bypass laser barriers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze

Do you plan to extend the game's playtime with collectibles, or will all of the items the Turtles collect be functional in nature?

There is one very well-hidden collectible, but for the most part anything you collect will be functional. We keep track of your completion percentage, which factors in items found and how much of the map you've traveled, so completionists will need to cover a lot of ground.

Obviously the game is grounded in the Nick series universe, but will there be any elements borrowed from other incarnations of the Turtles?

Shhhhh! Those are secret!

One game, three consoles

Danger of the Ooze is coming to Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo 3DS. Did you always conceive of the game as both a home console and portable release, or did that decision come later in development?

It was always discussed as a possibility, so we planned for the ports ahead of time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze

Will there be any major differences between the big-screen and small-screen versions of the game?

We really wanted players to get the same experience regardless of their platform choice, so the only differences are the ones you'd expect: 3DS has stereoscopic 3D, whereas consoles have improved graphics and music, as well as Achievements/Trophies.

Finally, can you tell us about the Xbox Live Achievements players will be able to unlock in Danger of the Ooze?

My philosophy on Achievements goes hand in hand with WayForward's approach to licensed games – since this could be the player's first game (or certainly first Metroidvania), I want Achievements that reward them for progress, but also sort of hint at alternative ways to play.

When experienced gamers sit down in front of this game, they're going to be curious about speed runs, etc. But new players won't have that same frame of reference, so by having Achievements that reward fast completion times, it should goad them into attempting it. I try to have a good mix of both novice and expert Achievements.

Fresh looks at upcoming horror games The Evil Within and Alien: Isolation for Xbox One and 360

Next month will be a landmark time for horror games. Sega and the Creative Assembly have Alien: Isolation, a game inspired by the first Alien film, on the way on October 7. Just one week later, Bethesda and Tango Software will unleashed The Evil Within, the long-awaited return to horror from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. Both games are due out on Xbox One and 360, so our last-gen brothers need not miss out on the scares.

With both games drawing near, the publishers are keeping them in the spotlight with new information and trailers. Alien: Isolation will be getting post-launch DLC for six months in the form of challenging new Survivor mode missions, we recently found out. As for The Evil Within, I recently had the opportunity to play the game and experience its disturbing atmosphere. Continue reading for detailed impressions and a look at both games' new trailers!

Fight for survival in Alien: Isolation

When we last previewed Alien: Isolation, I focused on the game's story mode and preorder bonus missions. In the main story, players will control Amanda Ripley, daughter of the protagonist of all four Aliens films, Ellen Ripley. The preorder missions (also available to buy post-release) will actually allow you to play as Ellen Ripley during and after the events of the first film.

Isolation also includes a non-story mode called Survivor. In this mode, players will take on timed challenge levels. The goal is to reach the end and survive against deadly foes like an android gone haywire and the Alien itself. These missions add a sense of urgency to the game, since you can't sit still and hide for too long. They even get a little competitive thanks to leaderboard support.

Alien: Isolation Survivor mode

The game will ship with a single Survivor mission to whet player appetites. After release, Sega plans to release five additional Survivor add-on packs as paid DLC. Each one will include three maps, a new playable character, and a challenging mix of new maps and game modes.

The first of the Survivor packs launches on October 28, three weeks after the game's release. The four following DLC packs will arrive over the next six months (the last one in March 2015). Players can also purchase a Season Pass to get all five packs at a twenty-five percent discount.

Alien: Isolation will be an extremely atmospheric (and scary) game. It comes to Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and 4, and PC on Tuesday, October 7.

Investigate the horrors of The Evil Within

In The Evil Within, you'll play as veteran police detective Sebastian Castellanos (voiced by Anson Mount). Sebastian and other members of the police force arrive at an asylum where a gruesome mass murder has taken place. Before long the culprit, a dark and haggard figure named Ruvik (voiced by Jackie Earle Haley) shows up and attacks the officers. Ruvik is seemingly invincible…

In the demo I played, Sebastian finds himself walking through a forest. The visuals for this segment are grainy and murky, making for a very unsettling trip. Soon our protagonist arrives at a giant flower, which starts to glow… And suddenly Ruvik is there, staggering towards Sebastian with a knife. It looks like he's done for, until the ghostly forest disappears and the hero finds himself in front of a dilapidated mansion. It feels like the hero recognizes this place.

Upon entering the mansion, you'll find yourself in a foyer surrounded by two staircases and numerous doors on the first and second floor. It certainly reminds of the original Resident Evil mansion. Back behind the two staircases is a vault door covered by a mysterious machine. The machine looks like a brain with three electrodes sticking into it. What the…?

The Evil Within

Fighting for your life

As Sebastian explores the mansion, Ruvik will materialize out of the ether at random times. You cant hope to fight him, so all you can do is either run like crazy or hide. The ability to hide under beds and in closets is cool, but in the preview build Sebastian constantly makes this heavy breathing sound as he hides. It sounds like he's hyperventilating! Hopefully that sound will have been dialed down in the final version that ships next month.

Anyway, those moments with Ruvik are tense and frightening. You might already be engaged with another monster or two when he appears, forcing a quick change of plans. Of course, the repeated appearance of an invincible protagonist is also kind of Resident Evil-like. The third Resident Evil featured such a monster, called the Nemesis. Ruvik looks more like a deranged homeless man than a big monster, but he'll stalk you throughout The Evil Within all the same.

Navigating the mansion hallways feels a lot better than the older Resident Evil games, of course, since Evil Within uses modern controls. You'll have to collect items and solve puzzles, just as you'd expect from this sort of game. You'll also encounter frightening enemies like a crying woman with a horribly mutilated face. A few pistol shots will free her from her anguish. In a unique touch, all enemies in The Evil Within must be set on fire after you knock them out. Toss a match and they'll go up in flames, never to rise again.

The Evil Within

Mansion of horrors

As Sebastian passes through one particular hallway, he'll suddenly find himself pulled by an unknown force. The wall opens up to reveal a huge meat grinder, ready to shred him to bits. The first time I encountered this scene, I didn't react quickly enough and met my end. The next time, I spotted a blinking red light above the machinery. Quickly shoot it with the pistol to destroy the machine and escape unharmed.

The hero eventually discovers a tiny lab no bigger than a closet. That wouldn't be so bad, if not for the thing sitting on the table: a bisected human head. One half of the head is untouched and alive, while the other has been cut away to reveal the brain and viscera inside. A voice recording starts to describe grizzly experiments performed on unfortunate individuals like the one on the table.

Soon it becomes apparent that you'll have to engage in just such an experiment by attaching an electrical probe to the inside of the undead head. It will take some prodding (resulting in freakish sounds from the victim) to find just the right part of the brain.

Once you attach it successfully, a switch will go off in the nearby machinery. A red fluid starts to flow from the machine… and directly into one of the three valves on the door in the foyer. Sebastian will have to find the machines that unlock the other two valves and the horrors that await behind the vault door.

The Evil Within

The Evil to come

Like Alien: Isolation, The Evil Within will offer a season pass. It will include three DLC packs for $19.99. The first focuses on the hulking monster "The Keeper," with the second and third featuring Juli Kidman, Sebastian's partner from the main game. If they're anything like the demo I played, they will offer a creepy and action-packed good time.

The Evil Within arrives on Xbox One and 360, Playstation 3 and 4, and PC on Tuesday, October 14. Preorder from Amazon to receive the "Fighting Chance pack," containing several useful weapons and items.

FIFA 15

FIFA 15, the latest edition to one of the best-selling sports video game franchise in the world, is now available for trial on Xbox One for EA Access members. Unlike the demo version, which was released just over a week ago, this is the full game. The catch here is that EA Access members are limited to just six hours of gameplay.

We've just installed the FIFA 15 trial on our Xbox One. Watch our gameplay video!

This year's update to FIFA brings several improvements. Visual changes are noticeable right away. Players look more detailed, uniforms move realistically and get dirty, and the fields show changes as players move around.

FIFA 15

Another interesting new feature are emotions. For the first time ever, players have memories and will show emotion based on the context of the match. There are over 600 new emotional reactions, and players now respond to pivotal moments on the pitch whether they are bad tackles, missed chances, epic goals.

fifa 15

EA has also improved player movements. They say this is their most responsive FIFA game ever. Players' movements also reflect their real-life counterparts. For example, Messi, who is predominantly left-footed, will visibly favor that foot.

The FIFA 15 trial is only available to EA Access subscribers. For $4.99 a month, members can play some of EA's best Xbox One games. The curated list currently includes FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, Need for Speed Rivals, Peggle 2 and Madden NFL 25, with more to come in the future. EA Access membership also allows early access to upcoming EA games five days before the release date to play for a limited time. If you love it, buy it, and you can pick up right where you left off. Another perk is 10% discount on EA digital purchases on Xbox One.

FIFA 15 comes out on September 23rd in North America and September 25 in Europe. Will you be getting this game for your Xbox One? Let us know in the comments!

Solve a mystery in D4 or save sheep from doom in Flockers, both now available on Xbox One

D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die

Yesterday we brought you some unique insights into Xbox console games with new previews of Evil Within and Alien: Isolation for Xbox One and 360, FIFA 15 EA Access impressions, and an exclusive interview with the makers of TMNT: Danger of the Ooze. Now today is shaping up to be a day of not just reading about new games, but playing them…

Two new downloadable games have just launched on Xbox One! D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die from Access Games and Microsoft is now available for $14.99, and supports play with either the Kinect or a controller. Team17, maker of Worms Battlegrounds, has just published the lighthearted puzzle game Flockers for $24.99, or $18.49 for Xbox Live Gold members. Read on for links and impressions, plus a list of next week's releases!

D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die

First announced at E3 last year, D4 is the latest game from Deadly Premonition helmer Hidetaka Suehiro (aka Swery). D4 stars a private investigator whose wife was brutally murdered. The protagonist has the unusual ability to travel back in time, which he does in order to investigate his wife's murder. Even though he can visit the past, he can't change it. But of course he'll try to find a way to save his beloved anyway.

D4 is an story-heavy adventure game somewhat reminiscent of Heavy Rain on Playstation 3. But this one features all kinds of weird touches such as the protagonist's roommate, Amanda. She wears cat ears all the time and eats her food from a cat bowl. The game has a very distinct sense of humor. Side objectives like eating as many different kinds of food as you can add some levity to the otherwise serious murder mystery.

D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die

Most uniquely, D4 can be played with either the Kinect or a controller. Using the Kinect, you'll interact with objects in the environment using naturalistic hand gestures such as grabbing, pulling, and rotating. You can also answer the NPC's questions with actual voice responses (from the three answers displayed on-screen). Alternately, the game works just fine with a controller as well. There are a few issues with the game switching to Kinect without being told to do so, but we'll detail those in our upcoming review.

D4 is described as the first season of an overall game, with two episodes included in this download. More episodes will follow in the months to come. Give the game a try and let us know your impressions!

Flockers

For the last ten years, all of Team17's games have been either sequels or remakes to past hits like Worms. Flockers marks the first new IP to come from the studio in all that time, although technically it's a spin-off of the Worms series. This one is a puzzle game with 60 levels to test players' wits.

The goal in Flockers is to safely herd a group of mindless sheep to each level's exit. You'll need to instill certain sheep with abilities like building walls or staircases in order to help the endlessly advancing profession avoid amusingly grim deaths (gore can be turned off in the options menu). If that sounds like the classic game Lemmings, it is! Sony owns the Lemmings property so we'll never have a true Lemmings on Xbox, but Team17 has given us the next best thing.

Flockers for Xbox One

One interesting aspect of Flockers is its pricing scheme. Non-Gold members will pay $24.99 for the game, the same price as Worms Battlegrounds. Yes, those are basically PC prices, a little higher than console gamers are used to for downloadable titles. But Gold members can get the game for a 25 percent discount, making it only $18.49. If more games provide discounts like that, Xbox One users will have yet another strong incentive to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold.

  • Flockers – Xbox One – 6 GB – $24.99/$18.49 – Xbox.com Link

Next week on Xbox One

Plenty more Xbox One games are in store for next week:

  • Defense Grid 2 – September 23
  • Disney Infinity: Marvel Superheroes (retail) – September 23
  • CastleStorm: Definitive Edition – September 24
  • Kickbeat Special Edition – September 26

Also, we'll be Twitch streaming an early look at Forza Horizon 2 for Xbox One on Monday, September 22. Check our site that day for the official streaming time!

Incredible Toys - battle to save the Toy World with this Windows Phone game

$
0

Incredible Toys

Incredible Toys is a Windows Phone action/adventure game where you help a collection of toy heroes survive a journey through Toy World. Game play is along the lines of an action runner game with some RPG features. Graphics are nice with a slight children's storybook feel. I will say while gaming controls are simple, they can be a little stubborn at times.

Incredible Toys is not available for low-memory devices (not sure why) and while Incredible Toys has appeal, I'm not sure if it's strong enough to be a go-to title for your gaming library.

Storybook Graphics

Your main menu with Incredible Toys has options to upgrade your toys, shop for new gear/outfits for your toys, view your game stats, buy coins through in-app purchase and access the world map (to launch into game play). Across the top of the main menu you will find access to the game's settings and your player stats.

Incredible Toys Menu

Player stats include your coin count, rune count and star count. You also have personnel options to choose which available toys you want on your team. Coins and runes (looks like gems) are earned during game play and can be used to upgrade and unlock your toy heroes.

The game lacks a help section but does have a series of pop-up windows that will appear during game play that serve as tutorials. Settings are limited to sound and music levels.

Incredible Toys Upgrade

Game play is spread out across the world map in three acts. Each act has multiple levels to play and a boss to defeat. You will need to earn a set number of stars (earned during your final score for each level) and defeat the boss to advance through the acts.

Good Toys vs. Bad Toys

The object of Incredible Toys is to survive each level by destroying the enemy toys without taking on too much damage yourself. You will also have a collection of side-missions or quests available throughout the game.

Toy Map

Game play is rather simple in that you have to run your characters down a three lane course. Monsters will appear and run across the screen in these lanes and you must defeat them before they find their way across the screen.

If an enemy monster makes it across the screen, it will cost your hero some health points. To help keep things interesting, some monsters shoot at your hero and there are dangers along the path such as spikes that will ruin your day as well.

Incredible Toys

Some levels are played with one hero while others you get to work with two heroes. Movement between the lanes is accomplished by swiping up or down at the screen. When playing with multiple toys, you can also use swipe gestures to change the toy's positioning. Weapons fire from your hero is automatic and you have a power-attack button that sits behind the hero that can be use periodically.

Side missions call for you to complete tasks such as changing lanes a certain number of times, taking out a set number of monsters, etc.

Incredible Toys Tag Team

Your score is based on your health points with a maximum of three stars possible. You also can earn quest rewards of coins and runes. Some slain enemies will also produce coins that can be collected.

Overall Impression

I will admit that the more I played Incredible Toys, the game did begin to slightly grown on me. The graphics remind me of a children's storybook and are nicely drawn up. Game play is challenging enough to avoid getting stale too quickly and the RPG elements of upgrading your toy's strengths also helps the game's staying power.

While the game has several positives, it does lack that intangible factor that pulls you into the game and keeps you coming back for more. I think if the game had a little more variety in game play or maybe more power-ups that might do the trick. It does get a little old moving your toy from lane to lane throughout the levels.

Another challenge the game has to overcome is that the gesture controls are not always responsive. There were also times when a swipe would active the toy's power-attack instead of moving the character. These quirks can be a little frustrating.

While there is room for improvement, Incredible Toys is a Windows Phone game worth trying. It may not appeal to everyone but with a trial version available, you don't have anything to lose by giving it a shot.
