Angry Birds Go

Rovio is on a roll when it comes to updating their Angry Birds games on Windows Phone. Yesterday we had Angry Birds Rio picking up new levels and going free. Today we’re looking at Angry Birds Go! picking up an update. What’s new? How about new levels and more. Let’s check it out.

Angry Birds Go! was released to the Windows Phone Store back in December after an early false start. The game is free, but supported by in-app purchases. And unlike every other Angry Birds game, you’re not slinging little birds at pigs through a giant slingshot. Instead, this is a kart racing game with characters from the Angry Birds universe. The game has been well received and is sitting at 4.5 average review in the Windows Phone Store.

Here’s what’s new in version 1.2 of Angry Birds Go!

  • New Sub Zero episode
  • 8 new karts
  • Premium kart for each episode
  • New rewards

That’s right. Head into the Windows Phone Store and you’ll see a free update for Angry Birds Go! that introduces new levels and karts. Plus there’s snow everywhere. You’ll also be able to pick up new rewards daily by playing timed events.

Angry Birds Go! is a free game. Download it today from the Windows Phone Store. (1GB of RAM or more needed to play)

Flow Free: Bridges, simple puzzle game you can waste a lot of time on

Flow Free: Bridges

Looking for another great game to waste time on? Check out Flow Free: Bridges. In this puzzle game, you connect matching colors with pipes to create a flow. Pair all colors and cover the entire board. Use bridges to cross two pipes and solve each puzzle.

Head past the break to watch our gameplay video on a Nokia Lumia Icon.

Flow Free: Bridges features

  • Over 900 levels available in Free Play mode
  • 10 different board sizes
  • Starter, Challenge, Bonus, Classic, Mania, and Jumbo level packs
  • Strive for accuracy in Free Play using the fewest, most efficient moves
  • Strive for speed in Time Trial for the most and fastest solves
  • 20 scored Time Trial variants to choose from by board size and duration

It’s best to jump straight into Free Play mode to understand the game. Simply drag to connect matching colors with pipe, creating a flow. You solve each puzzle when the entire boards are covered. Pipes cannot cross or overlap, unless you use the bridges.

The top of the board displays the number of flows and moves. If you complete a board in the lowest amount of moves, you get a star.

Flow Free: Bridges screenshot

If you think Free Play is too easy, try selecting a larger board or different level pack. The starter pack has 5x5 and 6x6 boards, but they can go up to 14x14 boards. You can also try the Time Trial mode to make things more difficult.

If you’re puzzled by some of the boards, you can ask for hints. You only have a handful of hints available until the game asks you to purchase more. You can buy 20 hints for $2.99 or five for $0.99.

Flow Free: Bridges screenshot

Flow Free: Bridges is available at the Windows Phone Store for free. There’s an advertisement on top of the screen that doesn’t get in the way of gameplay, but it can be removed if you purchase any level pack for 99 cents. Since there are so many levels that you can play for free, you won’t be in a rush to buy any of the additional packs.

Give Free Flow: Bridges a try and let us know what you think in the comments!

New Big Game Hunter and Yu-Gi-Oh! games now available on Xbox 360

Cabela's Big Game Hunter: Pro Hunts and Yu-Gi-Oh! games now available on Xbox 360

It’s a slow week for console game releases, with no new titles appearing on the Xbox One. Luckily the digital versions of Square-Enix’s Tomb Raider and Thief are both on sale for half off, so Xbox One owners shouldn’t suffer from game withdrawals just yet. Unless the downloadable Strike Suit Zero materializes next week, that will have to tide the Xbox One faithful over until April 8th when Kinect Sports Rivals and LEGO The Hobbit show up.

The Xbox 360 does have a couple of new games, at least. At retail, Activision has just released Cabela's Big Game Hunter: Pro Hunts at retail for the low price of $29.99. Konami also published a new Xbox Live Arcade game today: Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels. Both titles appear to be available only in North America for some reason. Descriptions, Store links, and details about next week’s Batman XBLA release after the break.

Cabela's Big Game Hunter: Pro Hunts

On consoles, the Cabela’s series is pretty much the only game in town for hunting aficionados. The games tend to be low-budget affairs, with relatively simplistic graphics and animation. But they’re also a lot of fun if you like shooting things, and they do sell at value prices.

Cabela's Big Game Hunter: Pro Hunts for Xbox 360

Each Cabela’s release has a different angle to differentiate it from its huntin’ and shootin’ brethren. Pro Hunts features several famous hunting personalities as guides: Wade Middleton, president of Careco TV (?) and host of several TV shows; Jim Shockey, host of two shows on the Outdoor Channel; and Vicki & Ralph Cianciarulo, who appear on Archer’s Choice on the Outdoor Channel.

Pro Hunts sports environments that are four times larger than in previous Big Game Hunter titles. It also supports Activision’s Top Shot gun controllers.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels

Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels for Xbox 360

Talk about coming out of nowhere. Millennium Duels is Konami’s second Yu-Gi-Oh! XBLA game, following the 2010/2013 release Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Decade Duels Plus. This one comes from developer Other Ocean Interactive (who previously made Decade Duels and a couple of XBLA stinkers like War of the Worlds for other publishers).

Not much is known about Millennium Duels; Konami didn’t even bother to add a text description for it at Xbox.com. It supports online matches with 2-4 players. Curiously, it only offers 200 GamerScore worth of Achievements instead of the now standard 400.

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels – Xbox 360 – ? MB – $9.99 – Xbox.com Link

Next Week

If an under-described Yu-Gi-Oh XBLA game isn’t your thing, next week’s downloadable release for Xbox 360 (not Xbox One) might do the trick: Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate – Deluxe Edition from Austin-based Armature Studio and Warner Bros. Interactive.

Blackgate was originally released on Nintendo 3DS and Sony PS Vita as a portable companion to last year’s Batman: Arkham Origins. The story takes place three months after Arkham Origins, which was a prequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Famous enemies who show up include the Joker, the Penguin, Deadshot, Solomon Grundy, Black Mask, and Catwoman.

Although mainline Batman Arkham games have been taken place entirely in 3D, Blackgate utilizes a 2.5D perspective (two-dimensional gameplay with 3D graphics). This makes it play like a Metroid or Castlevania game – never a bad thing.  The portable versions have been criticized for unresponsive combat and frustrating trial-and-error boss fights, though.

XBLA improvements include a new map and hint system, enhanced graphics, and additional voice-acting during cut scenes.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate – Deluxe Edition is due out on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on Wednesday, April 2.

Subway Surfers updated with Mexico City World Tour for Windows Phone

It’s another month so time for another update to the popular endless runner Subway Surfers. Continuing on their ‘World Tour’ the game is leaving New York, and it now heads to Mexico City, for a bright and festive new skinning, along with new outfits, collecting spicy chilies and new weekly challenges.

Unfortunately, 512 MB RAM support is still not there, and we’re starting to think it just may not happen. (There are occasional clone apps that have been ‘hacked’ and show up on the Store, but those aren’t official ports. Play at your own risk.)

Subway Surfers have proved to be a widely acclaimed game, and the frequent updates on Windows Phone – which mirror those on iOS and Android – show that the platform is gaining traction. While re-skinning the game is literally a superficial makeover, it does keep things fresh, and we think it’s a novel idea.

Head here to the Store to pick up Subway Surfers 1.21 now for your Windows Phone. 1 GB of RAM or more required.

Thanks, Anmol M. and Sumit P., for the tips!

Star Wars: Assault Team boards both Windows and Windows Phone, now available and free

We recently looked at an upcoming Star Wars game for both Windows and Windows Phone - Star Wars Assault Team. The game has finally launched on Microsoft platforms today, opening up the popular, fictional galaxy far, far away. Windows Phone has received a mixture of Star Wars games, some containing angry birds and others tasking players to build tower defenses.

Star Wars: Assault Team is a card come strategy, turn-based game. Players are able to collect and assemble a powerful team of heroes to battle enemies and even other players across the universe.

For all the movie and lore buffs out there, Star Wars: Assault Team takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. But just because this is a card game, don't be fooled to believe it'll either be too simple or boring to play through. There's a lot of content here.

Players are tasked with completing challenging missions to infiltrate the enemy fleet, locate the Wookie resistance, overcome ambushes on the dangerous streets of Mos Espa and engage in battles across familiar planets, including Tatooine and Kashyyk. Some features of the game include:

  • Build and Customize a Team: Collect hundreds of character cards to create the ultimate team using the saga's most iconic heroes, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Boba Fett, and more.
  • Advance Heroes: Train, improve and strategically deploy each character's special attacks, making a team even more dominant against ever-powerful enemies.
  • Player vs. Player Combat: Fight against other players in PvP battles to win extra rewards.
  • Original Story: Complete all-new missions set between Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

Star Wars: Assault Team is a freemium game and can be downloaded from supported stores for free. This does mean that optional in-game purchases are present (store isn't yet online). It's certainly worth the small investment should you enjoy battling through levels and collecting cards.

Unfortunately, a slight drawback (and possible oversight by the developers) means that players are unable to sync game data between the two versions, which is lame. Let us know what you think about the latest mobile Star Wars game.

Get your war face on as Crytek's Warface for Xbox 360 goes open beta

Warface for Xbox 360

If you are a fan of Crytek and their creations, then you should be excited for the launch of their Warface Open Beta. Crytek is the brilliance behind games such as Crysis and RYSE: Son of Rome; they take advantage of their high-tech CryEngine to bring life-like and realistic graphics to the screen. Warface is another take on the common shooter, but powered by the company's insane graphics engine, and of course we cannot forget to mention that it is free to play.

According to the Crytek website, Warface is a game surrounded by “Conspiracy, Corruption, and Chaos”. We have to admit that the story is one we have seen before, a “world close to the breaking point” and a ruthless army attempting to threaten freedom as we know it.

The game was previously available as a closed beta for the Xbox 360, but has recently changed to an open beta for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Unfortunately, there is no word of the game coming to Xbox One, so for those of you who are still hoarding your last generation consoles – you are in luck!

According to a post from Microsoft, the open beta will bring three versus-modes that were included in the original closed beta. In addition, two beginner co-op modes will be available with “multiple mission types and difficulties”. Crytek states that they will continually be pushing out new content for those in the beta, so gamers will stay “entertained and wanting more”. New daily missions will also be available to make sure you check out and play the beta as much as possible.

We recommend checking out the above video to see the adventure and fun you are stepping into, and you can head to the Xbox Marketplace by clicking here, to download Warface for Xbox 360.

Will you be trying out Crytek’s Warface? It may be a good possible holdover until Titanfall lands on Xbox 360.

Halo Spartan Assault gets an epic mobile Windows sale next week, plus a Steam release

Halo Spartan Assault gets an epic sale next week, plus a Steam release

We don’t talk about Red Stripe Deals much anymore, but next week’s sale game is too hot not to celebrate. Major Nelson has just announced that the Windows Phone and Windows 8 versions of Halo: Spartan Assault will go on sale for $1.99 from April 3-9. The tablet and phone versions of Spartan Assault usually go for seven bucks apiece, making next week the prime time to scoop one or both of them up.

Halo: Spartan Assault is a twin-stick shooter based on the popular Halo franchise. Microsoft really seems to be pushing the game right now. The Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions have just dropped to $9.99 each (probably permanently), and the Steam version of the game will debut next week as well. More details after the break!

The Halo: Spartan Assault hierarchy

Halo Spartan Assault for Windows Phone
Windows Phone version

Spartan Assault first debuted on Windows Phone and Windows 8 last summer. Microsoft kind of bungled the US release of the Windows Phone version by making it a timed exclusive to Verizon. Non-Verizon customers had to download from other regions or just wait things out. Thankfully the exclusivity window ended and everyone can get it now.

If you were going to get only one or the other, I highly recommend Windows 8 over Windows Phone. The Windows Phone version suffers from absolutely terrible touch controls that never got fixed with an update. The Windows 8 version’s touch controls aren’t great, but it supports both Xbox 360 controllers and mouse and keyboard as well. So at least that version offers superior control options for people who desire them. See our review for a full comparison.

Halo Spartan Assault for Xbox One
Xbox One co-op mode

The Xbox One version followed on Christmas Eve. The big-screen version added a new online co-op mode (sadly without local multiplayer). It started out a bit buggy, but a recent patch set things mostly in order. Thanks to the online mode, best graphical performance, 1,000 Gamerscore of Achievements, and automatic controller support, the Xbox One version is the one to get.

Just this January, the Xbox 360 version followed its Xbox One brother. The 360 version (the only one I haven’t played) is feature identical to the Xbox One game, except with only 400 Gamerscore for its Achievements. Both versions launched at $14.99, a too-high price for what essentially amounts to a moderately-budgeted phone game with a few odd design choices. The new price of $9.99 is more appropriate for a game of Spartan Assault’s scope.

Halo Spartan Assault for Xbox One
Xbox One co-op mode

All four of the aforementioned versions of Halo: Spartan Assault share progress via cloud saves. When you load up one game after having played another, you’ll find your credits and experience transfer seamlessly. The actual process of beating levels and completing challenges must be repeated on each game, but that’s part of the fun. And each one offers its own Achievement list, so Achievement hunters will certainly find it worthwhile to pick up one or more versions of this Halo.

The Windows Phone and Windows 8 versions of Spartan Assault will be on sale for $1.99 from Thursday, April 3-Wednesday the 9th. Here are Store links for each version (current pricing reflected) to make things easier:

  • Halo: Spartan Assault– Windows Phone 8 – 716 MB – $6.99 – Store Link
  • Halo: Spartan Assault– Windows 8 and RT – 1,078 MB – $6.99 – Store Link
  • Halo: Spartan Assault– Xbox One – 2.53 GB – $9.99 – Store Link
  • Halo: Spartan Assault– Xbox 360 – 2.18 GB – $9.99 – Store Link

Full Steam ahead

Halo Spartan Assault coming to Steam
Steam screenshot

Non-Microsoft enthusiasts complained loudly when Halo: Spartan Assault debuted on Windows 8 but not Windows 7. Those haters can soon stop hatin’ because the Windows 7 version of Spartan Assault will at last launch next week on Valve’s popular Steam digital distribution platform.

The Steam version of Spartan Assault contains the same content as the Windows 8 game, meaning it lacks the console versions’ online co-op mode. As for Xbox Live cloud integration and Achievements, those seem unlikely as they don’t appear on the game’s Steam store page. We’ll know for sure when it launches on Friday, April 4.

Test your skill and reflexes in Bike Mania 2 for Windows Phone

BikeMania2

Bike Mania 2 is the sequel to the popular title for Windows Phone, Bike Mania. We previously looked at the title some years ago and even included it in a top games roundup. Luckily, this latest release lives up to the bar set by its predecessor and improves on already established mechanics.

Compared to the original game on Windows Phone, Bike Mania 2 brings a more "rich, dynamic and frustratingly challenging" experience. There are more than 100 levels with much more detail bringing each act to life. Players can play through three new worlds: Aztec, Pyramid and Industrial.

BikeMania2

Should you be an avid fan of said games, which task players with controlling a bike through challenging terrain, Bike Mania 2 is for you. There's now also moving terrain, which includes swinging bridges, moving platforms and even falling boulders. Multiplayer is where the action really kicks off with players battling against others.

Since every player enjoys to make a video game his or her own, Bike Mania 2 enables you to customize your bike just the way you like it. This personalization includes bike chassis, wheels, helmets and rider suits. The new options to further customize your character combined with the ability to compete against other players really sets this game apart.

BikeMania2

Having a bunch of minutes to spare on a daily basis can be poured into battling through on your trusty rider. It's also great to see the sequel released on the Windows Phone Store as we know many of you thoroughly enjoyed the first title. To unlock all levels in the game, a one-time purchase of $2.49 is required.

Download Bike Mania 2 from the Windows Phone Store for free (in-app purchase required to play through all levels). The Windows 8 version of Bike Mania 2 is on the way, we'll update you all once it's live on the store.

Rail Rush celebrates Easter with the latest update

Rail Rush Easter Update

Rail Rush is a fun Windows Phone 8 game that places you in a runaway mine cart that you have to maneuver through endless twists, turns and obstacles.

The endless runner game was recently updated to version 1.8 to add an Easter theme to the game. Rail Rush isn’t a stranger to holiday themed such as the Christmas theme update that was pushed out late last year. The Easter theme adds a bit of color to the game, a large collection of runaway Easter eggs and adds nicely to an already fun Windows Phone game.

The version 1.8 update adds a Sweet Wonderland world that has you ducking and dodging giant Easter Eggs, lollipops and other candy delights. You also have a new Hero available from the Rail Rush Store, Danny Bunny. Danny Bunny is suited up in a pink Easter Bunny costume and can use his powers to help you destroy the giant Easter eggs that in the Sweet Wonderland world.

Rail Rush Easter update

Rail Rush is a challenging game for Windows Phone 8 that is a great way to pass the time with. Along with the Sweet Wonderland gaming world, Rail Rush has eight more worlds that range from your typical old mine to the Christmas themed Snow Land to the Halloween themed Horror Land. There is even an undersea world and a world filled with dinosaurs.

Rail Rush is a free game that includes the first five worlds. In-app purchases are available to unlock the additional worlds and other gaming features. Rail Rush is available for Windows Phone 8 devices (including low-memory devices) and you can pick up your copy of Rail Rush here in the Windows Phone Store.

Fishy Rush, an endless swimmer for Windows Phone 8

Fishy Rush

Fishy Rush is a casual game for Windows Phone 8 that takes the endless runner genre under water. With Fishy Rush, you swim your goldfish for as far as you can, collecting coins along the way.

The game is not all fun in the sun with plenty of dangers and shark attacks to avoid. You can collect coins and pearls to use in the game's store to buy upgrades and there are plenty of power-ups to help you survive the dangers of the deep blue sea. Fishy Rush isn’t a terrible game for your Windows Phone but some may find it falling a tad short of the mark.

Fishy Rush Main Menu

Game Layout

Fishy Rush takes on the simplistic approach to the game’s main menu with options to jump into the game and access the game’s settings. Settings include music/sound effects on or off, viewing the about screen, selecting your language and visiting the game’s Facebook Page.

Fishy Rush In-Game Store

Prior to jumping into game play, you will have the option to spend the gold coins and pearls you collect during game play on various boosts and upgrades.

Game Play

Game play is straightforward, guide your goldfish through the water for as far as you can, collecting as many coins, pearls and power-ups along the way.

Fishy Rush Game Screen

The fish’s forward motion is automatic and you control the depth of his swim. Tap and hold the screen to raise the fish towards the surface and release your hold to have the fish dive to the bottom.

Fishy Rush Danger Sign

Dangers range from spiny puffer fish to electric eels to shark attacks. Fishy Rush is nice enough to warn you of shark attacks with a flashing exclamation point that will appear at the level the shark will enter the screen.

Across the bottom of the game screen, you will find your distance score, gold coins collected and your life count. To give the game a little bit of a challenge, Fishy Rush also has a series of quests such as traveling across the bottom for a set distance or swimming close to two sharks. Meet the challenge of the quest and you get bonus coins.

Fishy Rush Dangers a Plenty

Power-ups available include a magnet that will attract the gold coins to your fish, extra lives and point multipliers.

As with most endless runner type games, with Fishy Rush the further you swim the faster the game pace becomes. All of which adds to the challenge of the game.

Overall Impression

I cannot say that Fishy Rush is a bad game but I also cannot say it is a must have game either. Graphics are nice and game play challenging enough to keep things interesting.

Fishy Rush is a game that is fun to play for short bits of time but does not have that addictive quality to it. Maybe it is that the endless runner style has been done so much, it is hard to find an angle to create a draw to keep you coming back for more. I just couldn’t help but think the game was missing something.

There is a trial version available for Fishy Rush with the full version of the game currently running $.99. The game is available for Windows Phone 8 devices (including low-memory devices) and you can find Fishy Rush here in the Windows Phone Store.

Hexic

Microsoft Studios has brought the classic puzzle game of Hexic to Windows Phone devices and Windows 8 devices. The game brings 100 challenging levels of geometric goodness in a new touch-friendly experience. Plus it's free!

The game features all new chain combos with swipe-and-match gameplay and mechanics originally designed by Alexey Pajitnov, creator of the legendary puzzle game Tetris. We've seen Hexic before as a Xbox Live title for Windows Phone 7 and the latest version looks to build upon the appeal of the previous.

Hexic

All you need to do is create clusters of same-color hexagons to clear them from the board. But there are new touch controls and adventures as you go up against encryption cells, corruption clusters, mysterious dark fragments, and viral vectors.

The game also offers new boosts and assists that will send your scores soaring. It allows you to compare and compete for high scores with friends on level-by-level leaderboards.

You can also connect Hexic to Facebook and share your progress with your friends. While you play a level on your Windows Phone, you can pick from where you left off on your Windows 8 device.

Hexic

Hexic is an addictive game as you spin and swipe your way through challenging levels. It is Xbox LIVE enabled, so the achievement hunters would find another reason to download and give this free game a whirl.

Download Hexic for Windows Phone 8 devices from the Windows Phone Store or for your Windows 8 devices from the Windows Store.

Give it a spin, and let us know if you have what it takes to save Hexic?

Thanks, everyone, for the tip!

Throne Together gets a regal first update on Windows Phone and Windows 8

New Xbox games for Windows Phone are few and far between these days, so we have to treasure the ones we get. Today’s release of Hexic puts us up to four games for the year, the first of which was Throne Together from Rogue Rocket Games. Throne Together, a free to play puzzle game, launched on Windows Phone and Windows 8 at the beginning of the month.

Like many games, Throne Together suffered from a few bugs upon release. Rogue Rocket has been working to iron those bugs out, as the recent update to both versions of Throne Together proves. The update not only fixes some problems, it also adds new features that make gameplay more interesting. We’ve got full release notes and fresh screenshots from the update after the break.

Throne Together version 15.3.6 release notes (yes, that’s the version number)

Throne Together

  • Added "build to the crown" mechanic
  • Added "fill in the castle" mechanic
  • Added "ghost block" and "scaffolding" boosts
  • Added shields and parapets as castle flare
  • Clarified tutorials
  • Fixed bugs!

You’ll have to play for a while before encountering the new boosts, but the other new mechanics pop up fairly early in the game. The “build to the crown” mechanic basically adds new floating crowns to some levels. If you stack your blocks so that they touch the crowns (while still remaining connected to the castle throne), you’ll collect those crowns and score bonus points.

Throne Together often requires players to complete multiple objectives in order to beat a level. Some levels now have “fill in the castle” as one of the goals. You’ll see an outline that must be completely filled in with various pieces. Leave a gap and you’ll lose the level, so play carefully. Filling in the castle adds a new level of challenge to the game, but it’s also quite fun.

The new flare shows up whenever you complete a castle and finish the level. At that point, parapets and other decorations will appear on the castle and give it a more royal look. It's a nice touch.

The update unfortunately does not fix the Facebook sign-in issues I’ve been experiencing with the game. The problem only seems to affect a small portion of users, so at least most players can sign in properly. Rogue Rocket has been good enough investigate the issue; hopefully they solve it in time for the next update.

Throw it together already

Throne Together

Throne Together is a block-stacking puzzle game. Each level starts out with a partially constructed castle. The player’s job is to add various shaped pieces to the castle without causing it to fall down. Put too much weight on the lower pieces and they will develop cracks or even break, so you need to distribute the weight evenly. With lots of different goals and castle pieces and a charming art style, Throne Together is a better than average puzzle game.

Machinarium for Windows Phone

When Machinarium arrived on Windows Phone last week, the news was bittersweet. On the one hand, Machinarium is one of the greatest traditional adventure games I’ve ever played. It creates a totally unique world filled with living robots, tells a compelling story using absolutely no text or voiced dialogue, and looks utterly beautiful. On the other hand, the Windows Phone version suffered from a show-stopping crash quite early in the game. You couldn’t enjoy it for long.

As it turns out, the crash resulted from an earlier test version mistakenly being published as the full game. Once developer Amanita Design discovered the source of the issue, they quickly set about publishing the correct version. Machinarium has now been updated on Windows Phone and runs without crashing! What’s more, we have exclusive news of Windows 8 and RT versions as well.

Escape from prison

Machinarium for Windows Phone

The fun-killing crash occurred just after the scene in which robotic hero Josef escapes from a boiler room in which he’s been trapped. He then spies two conspirators in the process of brewing an evil plan. No sooner does Josef realize their intent than the villains capture him and throw him into a prison cell. At that point pre-update, the game crashed like Rob Ford when his dealer goes out of town.

Machinarium for Windows Phone

After updating the game, the story now progresses as normal through the prison sequence. Josef awakens in a cell with a partially disassembled robotic smoker and must figure out an escape plan. It’s a challenging sequence that will tempt you to utilize the in-game guide. One bit of advice I can give you is don’t forget about the light bulb in your cell; surely it will play a part in helping your cell mate.

Having escaped from the cell, Josef will eventually make his way out of the terrorists’ hideout and into the city itself. I had a tough time putting my phone down at that point and starting on this story. Machinarium’s world just teams with imagination, possibility, and intrigue. Now that the game works properly, I can dive headfirst into it and start preparing our upcoming review.

Coming soon to a tablet near you

Machinarium for Windows Phone

Machinarium started life as a Steam game, so Windows 8 gamers already have an avenue for playing it. But the Windows 7 version is not touch enabled, nor does it benefit Windows RT users (who can’t run non-RT applications).

Luckily, Amanita Design has revealed to us that both Windows 8 and RT versions of Machinarium are already in the certification process. These will look and play just like the phone game but run at a higher resolution. If all goes well, the tablet versions should launch sometime in April. We’ll let you know as soon as they become available!

Power Cricket T20 launches on Windows Phone, celebrating ICC tournament in Bangladesh

Power Cricket T20

As the ICC (International Cricket Council) World Twenty20 tournament happens in Bangladesh, cricket fans across the world are celebrating the shortest, and the most exciting, form of cricket.

Clearly, it was a great time for Games2win, one of the top online gaming companies, to launch Power Cricket T20, a casual cricket game for Windows Phone devices. Power Cricket T20 allows you play against the nine cricket teams from across the world and complete your quest of winning three tournaments though the game.

Power Cricket T20

It’s not an exhaustive sports simulation game, but a casual game where all you need to do is ‘see ball, hit ball’. You control the batsman, plan shots to play with or against the spin, and choose to hit straight down the ground, or play the ball on the off side or leg side.

Each time you bat second, and chase a target score to win the match. A dynamic bowling system ensures that no two matches are alike. For power hitting, you can choose to use the Power-Shots feature. Once you run out of your quota, you can buy bundles of Power Shots as well via in-app purchases.

Power Cricket T20

Download Power Cricket T20 for free for Windows Phone 8 devices from the Windows Phone Store. It’s not a serious app, but I ended up playing for half an hour continuous after downloading it for the first time. Yes, I’m a certified cricket fan. It can become addictive, and is good fun. Give it a shot, and let us know how you like it.

The five best Windows Phone games of March 2014

Welcome to our new regular feature: the best games of the month. Every month we’ll look at a collection of the newly released Windows Phone games that stand out from the crowd. The titles we choose will range in genre and production value. Anything goes as long as it’s fun, original (not using someone else’s IP without permission), and freshly launched.

March was a particularly strong month for Windows Phone because we got three new Xbox Live releases. Multiple mobile Xbox titles in a month is not a common occurrence nowadays. We’ve chosen two of those titles for this best-of list: Rayman Fiesta Run and Throne Together. Non-Xbox games tended towards average quality this month, but Machinarium, Castle Raid 2, and Super Polygon rise above the pack as excellent games.

Quick impressions and Store links after the break!

Throne Together

Throne Together

Throne Together is an Xbox Live-enabled block-stacking puzzle game. Each level starts out with a partially constructed castle. The player’s job is to add various shaped pieces to the castle without causing it to fall down. Put too much weight on the lower pieces and they will develop cracks or even break, so you need to distribute the weight evenly.

To place those pieces, tap and drag them down from the top of the screen. The pieces come in many shapes and sizes, not just squares and rectangles. Players will also unlock special pieces like doors and windows that provide bonus points when placed in specific locations.

Throne Together does have some difficulty problems stemming from its free to play nature; the later levels are virtually impossible to beat without purchasing boosts with real money. The game’s Facebook integration has been broken for some players (like me) since launch as well. But you’ll still have a great time until you hit the difficulty wall, and the developer continues to seek a solution to the Facebook issue.

With lots of different goals and castle pieces and a charming art style, Throne Together is a better than average puzzle game.

Super Polygon

Super Polygon

Of all the games in this article, Super Polygon (a clone of Super Hexagon) from Dangling Concepts is probably the most different from the norm. Players control a tiny polygon as it travels through a 3D tunnel. The controls are simple – just tap left or right to move your polygon around the center of the tunnel.

Being a music and rhythm game, Super Polygon features catchy and energetic electronic music. As the song plays, players will have to dodge oncoming walls in order to keep your polygon alive. The obstacles and player movement match the beat of the music, creating a cool and hypnotic effect.

Because it’s so different from the norm, you really have to experience Super Polygon for yourself. And since the game is free (with a few optional IAPS such as removing ads), that should be very easy to do.

Castle Raid 2

Castle Raid 2

Here’s a game we haven’t covered yet. Castle Raid 2 comes from Arctic Mill, a small indie studio based in Sweden. And yet this game feels like it comes from a much larger studio thanks to its excellent hand-drawn artwork, voice acting, and clever gameplay.

Castle Raid 2 is a real-time strategy game in which two medieval fantasy armies battle for supremacy. RTS games are traditionally fairly complex, but Arctic Hill has done a great job of streamlining the core concepts for mobile play. Instead of sprawling maps, each map fits on a single screen. At either end you’ll find one of the two combatants' castles. Destroy your enemy’s castle and you’ll win the match.

Before you can start producing knights, archers, and other military units, you’ll have to gather some resources. Simply create a few peasants and they’ll gather up the resources automatically. A peasant can only collect resources once though, so you need to make a steady stream of them in order to keep the resources flowing.

Once you’ve got the necessary resources you can create military units to attack the enemy and protect your peasants. Again, these units automatically go to work so there’s no need to micromanage. Order up three of the same unit simultaneously and you’ll get an upgraded unit who can deal a lot more damage. The key is to release a good variety of units and cancel out your opponents’ forces.

It takes a few rounds to master the balance of resource gathering, attacks, and using your towers’ special abilities. But once you get a grip on Castle Raid 2’s battles, you’re in for an addictive campaign. Feeling competitive? Castle Raid 2 also supports 2-player head-to-head battles on one device.

Machinarium

Machinarium

Machinarium is a point-and-click adventure game that stars a little robot named Josef. As the game opens, we see him dropped in a scrap heap outside of a gigantic industrial city. Josef wakes up, repairs himself, and sets off towards the city. Once the player helps him get inside, Josef sets about searching for his childhood robot friend. Along the way he’ll help robotic citizens in need as well as working to stop the evil Black Cap Brotherhood from destroying the city.

The story unfolds without any text or dialog. Instead, characters speak in voice bubbles that show little pictures about what they’re saying. This sells the idea that everything happens within an alien world. And yet the story is surprisingly involving and emotional, thanks to the gorgeous art-style and hand-drawn animation of each character.

Machinarium is one beautiful game. It feels like an interactive cartoon, just like most of the best adventure games of yesteryear. The robots’ world comes to life through an amazing attention to detail. Although Machinarium suffered from a crashing bug upon its release, the latest update fixes the problem. Buy it without fear, adventure game fans.

Rayman Fiesta Run

Rayman Fiesta Run

When Rayman Jungle Run appeared on Windows Phone and Windows 8, it quickly took the mantle as the best platformer on mobile Windows platforms. The sequel Rayman Fiesta Run ups the ante, improving on its predecessor in both gameplay and visuals, and it even offers much more reasonable Xbox Live Achievements to boot.

Rayman and his friends now travel across a sprawling world map where they will access a total of 76 levels. Like Jungle Run, the goal of each level is to collect 100 Lums. But the Lums you collect can now be spent on power-ups and unlocking new characters and artwork. Rayman adds swimming to his repertoire of moves, and yet the controls remain perfectly simple and responsive.

Fiesta Run is a beautiful game, with vibrant colors and impeccable artwork. Besides gorgeous new character art and background themes, Ubisoft and Pastagames have also added 3D platforms into the mix. These don’t appear in every single level, but they add a great sense of depth whenever they show up.

For my money, Rayman Fiesta Run is the single finest Windows Phone game released in the month of March. Check out our full review for more impressions!

Numolition, a fantastic number puzzle game for Windows Phone 8

Numolition

If number puzzles are your cup of tea, you need to check out the new Windows Phone 8 game Numolition.

The game’s premise has you working with a crew of demolition experts and need to flatten as many puzzles by creating combinations of two or more of the same numbered blocks. You can add or move these blocks to create the combos, which in turn can be demolished by tapping on the group. It sounds easy but harder than you may think.

Add attractive graphics, three challenging gaming modes and Numolition turns out to be a solid gaming title. Numolition was released on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone last week and in playing the game over the weekend, it is a very appealing addition to the Windows Phone 8 gaming library.

Game Set-up

The main menu for Numolition lists all three gaming modes displayed in comic book fashion and has a settings gear sitting in the bottom right corner. Settings will give you the option to mute the sound/music, turn off the game vibration, display the gaming credits and offer the option to like the game over on Facebook. The game modes are progressively unlocked as you earn stars during game play.

Numolition Menus

Three gaming modes include:

  • Levels: Fifty puzzle levels to tackle and your gaming starting point.
  • Towers: An endless supply of number blocks and bricks will fill the screen in this gaming mode. Combine blocks to equal ten to create a bomb that will demolish sections of the tower (including the bricks). The more bombs built and exploded, the higher your score.
  • Sandbox: A collection of bricks and blocks that you have to clear. While you can create the combination of two or more of the same blocks to remove them from the scree, you will need to make bombs (combining two or more blocks to equal ten) to eliminate the bricks.

Numolition Levels Game Mode

You begin with the Levels gaming mode that has a series of puzzle levels that call on you to remove all the numbered blocks.

Game play is simple. You will have a collection of blocks that are numbered 1-9. To remove the blocks, you will need to create an collection of two or more of the same numbered blocks. You can combine these blocks to change their number value and/or move the blocks horizontally to create the grouping of blocks. Once you have your group of blocks created, just tap on the cluster to demolish them.

After you clear all the blocks you earn a star and advance to the next puzzle level. Earn enough stars and you can unlock the other gaming modes.

The first few levels of Numolition serve as a tutorial that walks you through the various aspects of game play. Puzzles in the Levels gaming mode can be replayed to earn additional stars by removing all but one designated number block. This will help you accumulated enough stars to unlock the chapters in the Tower mode as well as the Sandbox gaming mode.

Game play is similar with the Tower and Sandbox gaming modes except in these games the puzzle includes bricks and the ability to combine the blocks to total ten, which creates a bomb. The bomb, when tapped, will take out a small cluster of blocks and is the only way to remove the bricks.

Numolition Tower Game Mode

Along with the three gaming modes, Numolition has over 120 bonus challenges scattered throughout the game to keep things challenging.

Overall Impression

In a nutshell, Numolition is a great gaming option for Windows Phone 8. The comic book graphics help the game stand out and the puzzles challenging enough to keep the game from growing stale. There is definitely a strategic element to Numolition’s game play relying more on mathematical deduction than a speedy touch.

Numolition Sandbox

As the Windows Phone Store description says Numolition is educational at heart and a fun challenge for all ages. I can see this game being a nice addition to the Kid's Corner to help with basic math skills while driving the older crowd crazy trying to find the right combinations to solve the puzzles.

My only nit with the game is that Numolition lacks a help or reference section. While the tutorial levels do a good job of showing you how to play the game (and you can always replay them), it would be nice to have a centralized reference section.

If you are looking for an attractive puzzle game for your Windows Phone 8 gaming library, take a chance with Numolition. There is a free trial version available that gives you just enough gaming experience to get you hooked.

The full version of Numolition is currently running $1.49 and the game is available for Windows Phone 8 (not available for low-memory devices). You can find your copy of Numolition here in the Windows Phone Store.

Spirit of Hero review, visit ancient Vietnam in this exclusive Windows Phone MMO

Spirit of Hero for Windows Phone Nokia Lumia 1520

Windows Phone 8 is home to an excellent massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) called Order & Chaos Online. Sadly, publisher Gameloft sent that game out to die by failing to support it with updates and keep it content-identical to its superior iOS and Android versions. What’s a Windows Phone-owning MMORPG fan to do?

Enter Vietnamese developer TeaMobi, recent graduate of Nokia’s AppCampus program. TeaMobi has just released an MMORPG called Spirit of Hero on Windows Phone – before competing platforms. We learned about Spirit of Hero through Windows Phone Central’s popular “Newly Discovered Games” forum thread, where our dedicated readers share the latest games they’ve discovered. Is Spirit of Hero a worthy successor to Order & Chaos Online? Find out in our detailed launch review.

Create your hero

Spirit of Hero for Windows Phone

After registering a TeaMobi account and logging into the game, players create a character. Spirit of Hero offers five classes: Warrior, Swordsman, Bowman, Gladiator, and Wizard. All must be human; no fantasy races here. You’ll select your hero’s gender and nation of origin – the Green Dragon (?) or Black Tiger (?). Your character also has an element that can’t be changed. How the nation and element affect the game itself is not explained.

The 3D models look great in the character menus, but things aren’t so pretty during gameplay. The game itself is also 3D, taking place from an overhead perspective instead of behind the character’s back. The level of detail is fairly low though, even when you set the game’s Graphics to “Very High.” Everyone has a blocky appearance, as if Spirit of Hero was designed for Windows Phone 7 (which it wasn’t). And yet somehow the frame rate isn’t all that smooth, even on the beefy Lumia 1520.

Visit virtual Vietnam

Spirit of Hero for Windows Phone
Tell me this dialog doesn't remind you of Full Metal Jacket.

I’ll be the first guy to tell you that graphics aren’t everything – a game like Spirit of Hero can still be fun regardless of its weak graphical engine. The premise (as I understand it) is that you’re a warrior in Son Nam, the kingdom that eventually became Vietnam in real life. You go on quests, and that’s about it. MMOs tend to try to hook players with a unique narrative, whether or not the game itself will actually follow up on the initial narrative. Spirit of Hero really has no story at the outset, for better or worse.

Your first quest will be to talk to all the NPCs (non-player characters) in the starter village. They all have wacky names like Brother Seven and Aunt Eight. I guess Vietnamese people actually go by names like that? Or maybe the developers translated everyone’s names regardless of the aesthetic appeal. Think about that idea. Would you prefer to be called by your real name or what your name means?

One thing quickly becomes apparent as you speak with NPCs and accept quests from them: TeaMobi does not have native English speakers on staff. The characters all speak simplistically, with improper capitalization (!)  and frequent grammatical mistakes. The Engrish translation sort of adds to the game’s hyper-Asian flavor, but it can be difficult to understand what people are telling you at times.

Monster hunting

Having introduced yourself to the NPCs, your next few quests will involve killing certain numbers of the local wildlife – standard MMORPG stuff. The combat is easy enough to learn. Simply move around with the virtual stick, and then press your main attack button or one of two sub-skill buttons to attack enemies. You’ll also find HP and MP restorative potions hotkeyed next to the action buttons.

Navigation and combat mostly work well enough, but the virtual stick is small and in a fixed position instead of the more comfortable follow-your-thumb-where-it-goes style. Some MOGA controller support would be great. Another issue I noticed while killing caterpillars is that picking up dropped items is much too hard. Walking over them doesn’t seem to do it, nor is there a button for it. I did manage to pick up some drops, but not others. Perhaps the hit detection on items needs some work.

Social features

Spirit of Hero for Windows Phone

People play MMOs for different reasons. One of those is to meet other players and socialize with them. One thing I can say in this game’s favor is that it feels well-populated at launch. You’ll encounter lots of live players in the starting towns and surrounding areas, selling the idea that you’re in an MMO instead of a single-player game. If there are instanced zones, I haven’t seen them yet.

That said, Spirit of Hero doesn’t encourage communication as much as other MMOs I’ve played. It lacks a global chat option, as far as I can tell. Any chat messages you type will be visible only to nearby players, not everybody.

You can add people to a friends list, but the process for doing so is unintuitive. After tapping and selecting another player, his or her name appears way off at the top of the screen. You have to tap the name from there in order to befriend, trade, or party up with the other player.

After reaching level 10, players can elect to engage in or abstain from PVP (player versus player) combat. Suppose you'd rather form a guild of like-minded players instead of fighting other humans? According to the character menu, guild support is coming in a future update.

In-app purchases

Spirit of Hero for Windows Phone

Spirit of Hero is a free to play game. The free-to-play payment model was basically invented in Asia, so that comes as no surprise. The only IAP I’ve encountered so far is gold, which you can earn by killing enemies, etc. or choose to purchase.

Gold comes in quantities of 99 cents all the way up to fifty bucks. Annoyingly, you have to select a gold package before you can see its actual price. It’s too early to say how essential gold-buying will be to the overall gameplay experience, but Asian MMOs (as I understand it) usually allow people to grind it out instead of forcing purchases.

Room to grow

It’s hard to pronounce judgment on an MMO at launch, especially one that will likely grow and change from month to month for a while. Let’s just summarize what Spirit of Hero is right now, that you might weigh the concept against other MMOs on the market.

As I said earlier, Spirit of Hero is set during a historical period of Vietnam. Although it has some fantastic elements like magic and monsters, it’s fairly grounded on the whole. Players can only create characters who look Vietnamese and wear appropriate garb. The only mounts I’ve seen in the game are horses, those equestrian enemies of poor Christopher Reeve and practically everybody in Gone With the Wind.

Although there seems to be little or no story, I get the impression that Spirit of Hero is a romanticized retelling of some actual historical event. Games with dry historical settings like this are especially common in China, but it looks like they come out of Vietnam as well. If you think of a generic Asian MMO, the game you picture wouldn’t look all that different from Spirit of Hero.

From my western perspective, Spirit of Hero doesn’t have an appealing theme or setting. It also suffers from an awful translation, poor movement controls, and a few bugs and crashes. On the other hand, it’s free and features a fair amount of content at launch. If TeaMobi improves the controls and releases a cross-platform Windows 8 version, Spirit of Hero might just become a fairly compelling experience.

Dragon Revenge for Windows Phone 8, destroying everything in sight

Dragon Revenge

Dragon Revenge is an arcade styled game for Windows Phone 8 that has you playing the role of a dragon intent on destroying everything in sight. From buildings to trees to cows, your job is to wreak destruction upon the lands all the while avoiding the villagers arrows.

The game has an unlimited number of gaming levels where you guide your dragon across the sky, attacking villages and collecting gold. And Dragon Revenge isn’t just thoughtless destruction with several missions or challenges to tackle for extra gaming points. It may take a little time to get used to the gaming controls but for the most part, Dragon Revenge comes across as an entertaining game for Windows Phone 8.

Game Layout

Dragon Revenge’s main menu is laid out in straightforward fashion with options to jump into the game, setting your player name and accessing the game’s settings. Settings cover options to turn on or off the game’s sound and music, replay the gaming tutorial, and view the about screen.

Dragon Revenge Main Menu

Game play is spread out across countless levels where you are tasked with destroying any number of buildings. There are also side missions or challenges attached to game play that can earn you bonus points such as using your special abilities ten times in a game or kill twenty-five units in a game.

While Dragon Revenge’s game play is set up in levels, the game does not map out the levels. You advance through the levels in game play and if you leave Dragon Revenge in mid-game, you can resume where you left off. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but if your dragon bites the dust you have the option of spending coins to resurrect the beast and continue at the current level of play or start from scratch. On the plus side, the gaming engine does a decent job of avoiding too much repetition when you re-play levels.

Game Play

Dragon Revenge Abilities

Prior to jumping into a game you will be given options to set up your special abilities (the game has seven) and purchasing boosts with the gold you earn during game play. Abilities range from boulder throws where your dragon hurls boulders at the villagers to health regeneration. The abilities become available as you progress with game play or can be purchased with your coins.

Dragon Revenge Controls

The game screen for Dragon Revenge has your health meter in the upper left corner of the screen, your destruction counter in the upper center and your gold count in the upper right corner. Gaming controls are spread across the bottom of the screen with flight controls in the lower left corner and your weapons controls in the lower right corner.

Dragon Revenge Game Play

The flight joystick does take a little time to get used to and don’t be surprised if you slam into the ground often or find yourself flying around in a circle at first. Your primary weapon, as you might guess, if your dragons fire breath. While you have unlimited fireballs to spit at your targets, it takes a few seconds to regenerate your incendiary spit. The same can be said of the special abilities. For example once you hurl a boulder, it’ll take a few seconds before another rock becomes available to throw.

Game play is simple. Fly your dragon around and destroy everything in sight. You can burn down the trees, bar-b-que the cows, and torch the buildings. Each level is completed when you destroy the set number of buildings listed in the destruction counter.

Dragon Revenge Game Play

And don’t think the villagers will sit by idly while you flatten their villages. They will shoot arrows at you, show up in hot air balloons to shoot arrows from and generally be a pain in your side. If struck by an arrow, slam into the ground or fly too high and get struck by lightning you’ll lose health points. Should fate have you losing all your health, the game is over and you fail that particular level. Again, you do have the option to resurrect your dragon and continue at the current level by spending your coins or start from scratch at level 1.

However, once you destroy all the buildings to complete the level a scoring summary will appear, gold coins will be awarded and you can either visit the abilities store or advance to the next gaming level. Again, if you duck out of the game all your progress will be lost.

Overall Impression

Dragon Revenge is a nicely animated, entertaining gaming option for Windows Phone 8. It does take a little time to get used to the flight controls but nothing detrimental. The game has been updated several times over the past few days and while there isn't a change log, it feels as though the flight controls are improving. I'm not seeing my dragon fly uncontrollably into the ground as much.

While I wouldn’t mind seeing the playing levels mapped out where you don’t lose ground when your dragon dies, the current game design doesn’t ruin the gaming experience completely. You do get to keep your gold coins and I would image if you mapped out the levels, the game would have to have a set number of levels. As is, Dragon Revenge has unlimited gaming levels.

Overall, Dragon Revenge may not be a perfect Windows Phone 8 game but it’s not too shabby as is. I wouldn’t mind seeing customized dragons though.

Dragon Revenge is a free, ad-supported game that is available for Windows Phone 8. You can pick up your copy of Dragon Revenge here in the Windows Phone Store.
