Initially, 343 Industries said that Halo Wars 2 wouldn't support cross-play. Well, it looks like they've changed their minds because today they announced the feature.
Aside from getting enhanced for Xbox One X with visual upgrades that take advantage of the powerful console, the next update will enable cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10 users.

As an Xbox Play Anywhere title, players have the ability to enjoy Halo Wars 2 on their console or Windows 10, but up until now that hasn't included online cross-play. In a statement issued to the press, 343 Industries said that the team has worked hard to deliver this feature and final testing indicates it's ready for release. This update will also add Xbox Arena support so gamers will be able to organize and carry out their own tournaments soon.
Cross-play, Xbox Arena support, and the Xbox One X visual enhancements are all targeted for release in late October. However, you'll have to wait until November 7, 2017 to play the game in 4K when the console launches.
