Age of Empires II + III

It looks like the Definitive Edition treatment isn't limited to the original Age of Empires alone.

Microsoft promised some big news for Age of Empires fans during its Gamescom 2017 live stream, and boy did it deliver. In addition to a release date for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Microsoft announced the Age of Empires II and III will be getting the same Definitive Edition treatment.

Other than the announcement of the two new editions, the stream was light on details. However, going off of the Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, we can make some guesses about what new stuff will be tagging along in the second and third installments in the series.

The most obvious change will be upgraded visuals, with high-resolution textures and support for resolutions up to 4K. In addition, we can likely expect the same sort of gameplay and quality-of-life adjustments as the original's revamp, including new zoom levels, remastered music, better pathing for units, and much more. The revamped games will also likely continue the trend of being exclusive to Windows 10 via the Windows Store.

We'll have to wait for more information on the two Age of Empires II and III Definitive Editions, but for now, you can preorder the Age of Empires: Definitive Edition at the Microsoft Store. Also be sure to check out the announcement trailer for an even bigger reveal from today's live stream, Age of Empires IV.
