DOOM is delivering a treat for new players and veterans alike with its latest update.
DOOM may be more than a year old at this point, but the critically acclaimed game still has plenty of life left in it. Bethesda is treating fans to a new update for the game, appropriately titled Update 6.66, that not only shakes up multiplayer progression but also unlocks all DLC for everyone.
The main highlight of update 6.66 is the revised multiplayer progressions system, which now makes it easier to work towards specific items you want. From Bethesda:
With this update, we've changed when and how players unlock additional guns, demons, equipment and all of the player and weapon customization options. Instead of relying on the current random unlock system, everything now unlocks through specific leveling requirements and/or in-game challenges. Now, if there's a specific helmet you want, you can work toward unlocking it by focusing your play style on the related challenge. We're confident new and veteran players alike will enjoy the control and predictability in this new multiplayer progression system.
Bethesda has also tweaked multiplayer by getting rid of the Hack Module system in favor of a Rune system more akin to that of the DOOM campaign. Runes will act as perks, activating persistent abilities that can be customized in your loadout. The season pass has now been "retired" as well, Bethesda explains. In its place, all multiplayer DLC is now unlocked for everyone.
Lastly, if you have yet to give DOOM a shot, it will be free to download and play this weekend for Xbox Live Gold members. Starting tomorrow, July 20, and running through July 24, you can jump into the game for free with a Gold subscription. DOOM will also be discounted through this period to just $14.99, which appears to be the lowest it's been price so far (digitally, at least).
