Manga-inspired spaceship runner ‘Space Heads’ arrives for Windows Phone 8, powered by Unity

Let’s get this out of the way: endless runners are the new weather apps, the new puzzler fad in mobile gaming. They’re free, have great 3D graphics and more importantly, you can play them in under a few minutes. That’s why they’re popular and that’s why we love ‘em. It’s futile to resist (and fruitless to complain).

Space Heads is a new game available for Windows Phone 8 developed by Unity Studios, and yes, even the 512 MB crowd can get in on the action. Take that, Subway Surfers and Temple Run 2.  So why is this game worth your time? We’ll tell you.

Space Heads is described as a “manga-inspired spaceship runner”. It’s actually inspired by the Japanese anime film ‘Tekkonkinkurîto’, which is kind of neat, we have to admit. But here’s why WE like it:

  • More dimensions for moving up and down and side-flipping, instead of just right, left, center
  • Really good electronica music reminiscent of Daft Punk (think ‘Tron Legacy’)
  • Impressive graphics as it’s powered by the Unity gaming engine
  • Facebook integration to compare scores against friends

In short, Space Heads brings something new to the table. It’s not even so much a ‘runner’ since you’re in a ship, blasting through tunnels. There are even black holes that take you on special gem/coin runs, which gives a nice mini-game feel to it.

The ability to move up and down and flip the ship on the side in addition to moving left-right-center, brings on an extra challenge. It can be a little tough at first, since your brain has to think in more dimensions than typical endless-runners, but that’s the fun in it—it’s different. We also dig the thumping tunes, which match nicely with the game’s theme.

The game is free and yes, there are optional in-app purchases for “boost” options. We actually like the boosts as they blend nicely with the game’s style.

Check out our quick video above to see the game in action, but seeing as this is free and all Windows Phone 8 devices can participate, we think you should just download it and try it for yourself. What do you have to lose?

Pick up Space Heads here to the Store or scan the QR code below. All Windows Phone 8 devices. Free (optional IAP).
