Ocean Drift is a fast-paced, multi-level arcade game where you have to pilot a boat through a watery maze and safely reach the finish line. Available for Windows 10 Mobile, the game sports retro-styled pixelated graphics and easy, one-touch controls.
The free game is ad-supported with the option to remove the advertisements through a $1.49 in-app purchase and is also available for Windows Phone 8.1 (including low-memory devices).
Ocean Drift is a simple game to play but is challenging enough to avoid getting stale too quickly. There are a few stability issues that can be a bit frustrating, but overall it is a fun time waster of a game.
When you first launch Ocean Drift, the game starts a brief tutorial that covers boat controls. The boat's forward motion is automatic and to steer the boat to the left, tap/slide your finger across the screen to the left. To steer to the right, tap/slide to the right. The more you slide, the harder the turn and if you slide enough, the boat begins to go around in a circle.
Once you get past the tutorial, Ocean Drift transitions to the gameplay levels where you have to guide your boat through a series of watery mazes. For the most you find yourself dodging rocky islands that are positioned in the middle of the channel or tackle hairpin turns. Don't be surprised, though, if you run across a few sea serpents or giant sharks intent on sinking your boat. There is also a night mode that is particularly challenging.
The game includes 36 levels to tackle, each progressively unlocked. The difficulty level also increases as you progress through the game. Ocean Drift does require a delicate touch with respect to steering. Don't be shocked if you constantly find yourself steering into things until you get used to the sensitivity.
Along with keeping your boat afloat, the game has gold coins that can be collected and used in the gaming store to unlock additional boat styles. Prior to each level, you have the option to change your boating style or unlock new styles. The store is also accessible after each level, where you can choose your boats, buy coins or remove the ad support through in-app purchase.
For the most part, Ocean Drift ran smoothly, but there are a few issues worth noting. The full-screen ads can be a little grating and I did experience a few stability issues that caused the game to crash. These are not hair-pulling throw-your-phone-across-the-room issues, but at the very least the stability issues need to be addressed. If you have had your fill of the ad support, you do have the option to remove them through a $1.49 in-app purchase.
