While there aren't many complete golf games available in the Windows Phone Store, there are plenty of miniature golf offerings. Mini Golf Club is one of the higher rated offerings in the Store.
The Windows Phone game has several gaming modes, 3D graphics and a nice collection of challenging miniature golf holes. Mini Golf Club is also one of this month's AdDuplex HERO Apps. The HERO Apps program is a promotional campaign for Windows Phone and Windows developers on the AdDuplex network and partners AdDuplex with myAppFree, AppDeals, PluralSight and Windows Central to deliver a host of benefits to the top apps and games each month.
As we continue to spotlight these top apps, today we shift the limelight on Mini Golf Club from Zoltan Gubics and Obumo Games.
The main menu for Mini Golf Club has a slightly cluttered feel but is chalked full of options. These options include launching a game of golf, start the course editor, access the game's settings, continue a game, view any saved replays and play the premium holes you have unlocked.
Settings cover audio options, control layout and sensitivity and graphics quality. The premium holes are unlocked as you earn gaming achievements, link the game to your Facebook account, view advertisement videos and other minor tasks.
Game play has three modes that include:
- Tournament: Play a series of 9 hole courses for the top score.
- Practice: Practice on select holes from the available courses.
- Versus: A turn-based match you play against up to four of your friends in pass and play style.
Mini Golf Club features over 240 courses to tackle that include moving obstacles, ramps, turns, twists, tunnels, jumps slopes, sand traps, portals and more. On top of all that you can create your own holes through the course editor.
The game screen for Mini Golf Club has your course and hole information spanning the top of the screen. Here you will find the par score, your score, hole number and overall score. Along the bottom of the screen, you will find a pause button, an overview button, your stroke power meter control and your shot button.
You line up your shot by touch. Just tap and scroll to line up the green directional arrow, tap/hold the shot button and release it when the power meter reaches the desired level. The green directional arrow will grow as your power increases.
Once the golf ball comes to a stop, you just need to line up your next shot and swing away. Your playing view is from behind the ball and if you need to refresh your view of the complete hole, just tap the overview button.
Overall Impression
While I'm partial to the full game of golf (18 holes, drivers, irons, wedges, etc.), miniature golf games can be a fun way to pass the time. Mini Golf has plenty of courses to keep you busy, appealing graphics and challenging holes to conquer.
It will take you a few holes to become familiar with the power meter and how it affects your shots. I would have liked to have seen the power meter reflect your last shot, but going at it from memory after each shot adds to the challenge. I do like how you can save your gaming progress. It is a nice touch for the times you have to end a round abruptly.
Mini Golf Club is a free, ad-supported game with the ads steering clear of the gaming screens. You can remove the ad-support through a $1.49 in-app purchase. Overall, it's a fun game and available from both the Windows Phone and Windows Store.
