Iron Snout is what I would call a penny arcade styled Windows Phone game. It is a game that offers an entertaining way to pass short bits of time with but might struggle to hold up to longer gaming sessions.
The Windows Phone game is from Snoutup who brought us the endless flyer game Bunny Goes Boom. Iron Snout is a game of survival where you play the role of a brave pig who has to rely on his kung-fu moves to defeat an endless supply of Big Bad Wolves.
Available for low-memory Windows Phones, graphics are good, game play has a bit of a zip to it and overall Iron Snout is a decent time waster of a game.
Iron Snout keeps things minimal by combining your help, settings and game play menu into one screen. The title screen details how to play Iron Snout with options to mute the sound/music and displays your high score. Just tap the pig to start the game.
The game screen will have your piglet defending the center of the screen and wolves racing in from either side to make a meal out of him. Your health meter sits in the upper left corner and your score is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
To fight the wolves, tap either side of the pig to launch an attack to that side. You can swipe up to make the pig jump up to avoid an attack and swipe down to duck meat cleavers and other items the wolves will throw.
Game play picks up speed the longer you survive and on occasion, as you defeat a wolf you will catch their weapon to use against the next wolf that approaches. Wolves will throw just about everything but the kitchen sink at the piglet from rockets, axes and meat cleavers. There is also a deadly pogo-jumping wolf.
Most wolfs will require multiple hits to defeat and you need to be prepared to defend your pig from both sides. There is no way to replenish your pig's health and when his health meter bottoms out, the game is over.
Iron Snout is good for about fifteen minutes of non-stop gaming but then it'll bottom out and you will need to give things a rest. I think if there were a few bonus items to collect to give your pig a boost (machine guns, samurai sword, armor, etc.) or a way to replenish your health the game would have more staying power.
Overall Impression
Iron Snout is a fun Windows Phone game to pass short bits of time with and a nice title to have tucked away in your gaming library when you are in the mood for a quick gaming fix.
Game play is simple, fast paced and challenging. Graphics are nice and while I would like to see power-ups thrown into the mix to give the game a little more flavor but as is, Iron Snout is an enjoyable game.
At last check, Iron Snout is pulling down a 5 Star rating in the Windows Phone Store, which may be about a star too high. It is a free Windows Phone game and if you try things out, let us know what you think of Iron Snout in the comments below.
