One of the most popular games franchises is now in the hands of Microsoft. Phil Spencer, the head of its Xbox division, announced today that the previously announced $2.5 billion acquisition of Minecraft and its development team at Mojang, is now officially completed.

In a message on his Twitter page, Spencer stated, "It's official, today we welcome Mojang to the Microsoft Studios family. We're excited for the possibilities ahead w/the Minecraft community." Alongside with the acquisition, the three founders of Mojang will now leave the developer. That includes the creator of Minecraft, Markus "Notch" Persson.

Minecraft is already a big hit on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles, but Microsoft has already pledged support for the game on competing platforms like the PlayStation 3 and 4, iOS and Android. Spencer himself has confirmed that Minecraft will be released at some point for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone.

Do you believe Minecraft will continue to be a big hit with Microsoft as its owner?
