Diamond Blitz is an online puzzle game where you play against others to see who can create the most matches (or diamonds) from multi-colored tiles. Game play is similar to other online games available such as Wordament; you just try to play with colored tiles instead of letters.
Diamond Blitz is available for low-memory Windows Phones as well as Windows 8 devices. The game comes across as maybe more of an acquired taste than one with across the board appeal but isn't without challenge, testing your skills at speed and recognition. While it may not end up being everyone's cup of tea, Diamond Blitz is a gaming title worth trying and might even surprise a few.
Being an online game, Diamond Blitz, you will need to register create a player profile. Registration can be as simple as entering a screen name or you can link your account to an email. If you are not sure if you want to commit to registering, Diamond Blitz's settings does have an option to play as a Guest.
However, if you do link your screen name to an email you can import or use that screen name across multiple devices. Say you set up a screen name on your Windows Phone and want to play Diamond Blitz on a Windows 8 tablet. You can enter the email linked to your screen name, a code will be sent to you to use the same account on the tablet.
The main menu for Diamond Blitz has options to view your profile, check out the online leaderboard, view your gaming statistics, access the help screens and tap into the game's settings. Settings are minimal with the options to turn on/off the sound, music and tutorial.
Game play is simple in that you are given a collection of multi-colored cubes that you have to arrange on the gaming board. You arrange the tiles to create diamond shapes by matching up the same colored sides of the tiles. There are also solid colored tiles that will appear from time to time that you can use to build a larger diamond shape for extra points.
Diamond Blitz's game screen has your collection of tiles lined up across the bottom of the screen along with your score and game timer. As you match all your tiles, additional tiles will be generated. However, if you get stuck and cannot match all your tiles an additional tile will be generated every fifteen seconds.
The goal is to be the player with the most diamond shapes created when time expires. Games cycle every three minutes and a scoring summary will appear at the end of each game detailing how well you faired against other online players.
Overall Impression
The pace of Diamond Blitz does have a little zip to it and as the playing board fills with tiles, finding a match can be challenging. In playing Diamond Blitz over the past couple of days, the game does grow on you a little but I couldn't help but feel it was missing something.
Again, game play is challenging but needs a wild card to help give the game a little more appeal. Maybe bonus tiles that would match up to any colored tile or a black side that isn't able to match up with any tiles.
While there is room for Diamond Blitz to grow, as is, the game is a fun time waster. Diamond Blitz is currently pulling down a 4.5 Star rating in the Windows Phone Store and a 4.8 in the Windows Store, both of which seems a smidgen on the high side but we won't quibble over half a star.
