Microsoft bought the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games in January and a new Xbox One game in the series is currently under development at Vancouver-based Black Tusk Studios. In a new podcast interview this week, Microsoft's Xbox lead Phil Spencer hinted that the new game will be similar in tone to the early games in the series.

In statements made as part of his chat on the IGN Podcast Unlocked show this week, Spencer said that he didn't think the next Gears of War game needs a full reboot. However, he added, "The thing that was great about the early Gears of War games, to me, [was] just the epic scale of the settings that I was in. The story, the setting was a lot more what I would call soulful and maybe even a little dark."

Spencer also said, "I think the game over time became almost more of a parody of itself; not for any kind of horrible reasons. It's hard to continue to manage the IP ... We've got to get back to that. The feeling of those individuals."

It may be a long while before the next Gears of War game is released; in fact, we don't expect it to go on sale until sometime in 2016 at the earliest. Do you think the next game needs to be darker and "soulful"?
