Minecraft's 'Better Together' cross-platform update is going live today

Minecraft's epic "Better Together" update is going live today, bringing together Xbox, Windows 10, Mobile, VR, and Nintendo Switch players together in a world-first.

Microsoft has been rebuilding Minecraft's back-end for a while, bringing the game's systems together into a single engine known as "Bedrock." Players across Xbox One, iOS, Android, Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, VR, and, later, Nintendo Switch will be able to connect together and play via dedicated "Realms," which are rented servers that persist even when the owner is offline.

The Better Together update also standardizes UI elements across all versions, and will allow Microsoft to update all of the Bedrock versions simultaneously.

This is the biggest update Minecraft has ever had, and it's rolling out today to Xbox One, Windows 10, mobile versions, and VR, with Nintendo Switch to follow later.

The Better Together update also allows users to purchase player-made Marketplace mods, to unlock across all versions of the game. Some older content packs from the Xbox One are being ported, but some older, license-bound packs may be lost in the transfer. There's also invite links coming, allowing you to instantly bring people into your Realm on Windows 10 and mobile devices without needing to go through menus.

The Better Together update has been tested with millions of players across all versions, squishing thousands of bugs and tweaking the feel of the engine to match what players are used to. The classic PC Java Edition will continue to be supported with new updates, too, and Microsoft is currently working with Nintendo to bring the game to Switch as soon as possible.

What about PlayStation? Well, Sony is notoriously anti-cross play, having blocked Microsoft's efforts to bring gamers together across various titles, and Minecraft is no different. That doesn't mean Microsoft has given up, though, as they're actively in talks with Sony about bringing PlayStation gamers into the mix (via DualShockers).

If you haven't already, you can pick up Minecraft on Xbox One for $19.99, on Windows 10 for $26.99, and on Windows 10 Mobile for $6.99.

Need for Speed Payback recommended PC specs revealed

Here's how beefy your PC will need to be to hit the ground running in Need for Speed Payback.

Need for Speed Payback is just around the corner for both consoles and PC. And while console players don't have to give any thought to their system specs, PC gamers will need the right hardware to hit the ground running. If you're looking to get your PC up to snuff before release, EA has now announced the minimum and recommended specs for the PC version of the game.

At the low end, EA says you can pull off 720p gameplay at 30 frames per second on low settings with an Intel Core i3 6300, 6GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 750 Ti (or AMD Radeon HD 7850). Those are the absolute minimum required specs, but they aren't particularly demanding by any means.

In terms of recommended specs, however, things get a little steeper. For 1080p at 60 frames per second on high settings, EA says you'll want at least an Intel Core i5 4690K with 8GB of RAM and NVIDIA GTX 1060 (or AMD Radeon RX 480) graphics. If you're intending to play at a higher resolution of framerate on high settings, you'll have to experiment with what your setup can achieve.

Need for Speed Payback is due to release on November 10. The game is up for preorder now at $59.99 across consoles and PC. You can find the full, detailed list of PC specs below.

The Xbox One X seems legit

The Xbox One X represents the start of Microsoft's fight back in the evolving console war, which, so far this gen, has been dominated by Sony's PlayStation. Multi-platform games moderately outperformed the Xbox One versions on PlayStation 4, but that should no longer be the case with the Xbox One X, which is 50% more powerful even than Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro.

With the largest line-up of console games, now spanning generations thanks to backwards compatibility, the Xbox platform is an amazing place to play, and with the X, it should become the best place to play, as games will look better and run faster.

Meet up with a couple of the allies that will be helping you out in Call of Duty: WWII.

We just got our first look at Call of Duty: WWII's story mode with a dedicated trailer earlier this week, and now it's time to meet some of the allies that will be helping you out throughout the campaign. In duo of new, short trailers, Activision introduces Major Arthur Crowley and Rousseau, two characters that will be central to parts of the story mode.

Major Arthur Crowley is described as a member of the British Expeditionary Force who "serves as a part of the Special Operations Executive, where he executes covert missions behind enemy lines." Rousseau, on the other hand, is a French Resistance fighter who is working to push the Axis powers out of France.

Call of Duty: WWII is set for launch on November 3 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The game is up for preorder now starting at $59.99 at Microsoft and other retailers. As usual, Activision is also throwing in some goodies for preorders, including a free multiplayer weapon unlock, a Divisions Pack with five premium gear sets, and a Zombies Camo for your gun.

Cuphead is an upcoming hardcore side-scrolling shooter with a 1930s twist.

Cuphead is already notorious for its difficulty, defeating hundreds of players at conventions and video game shows across the world. If nothing goes wrong, it should launch on September 29 on Xbox One and Windows 10 as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, complete with achievements that roam across devices.

TrueAchievements.com just exclusively revealed the Cuphead achievement list, and some of them look suitably fiendish.

Cuphead evolved from its boss-rush roots into something a little more Contra-like, complete with platforming levels riddled with bullet hell-style shooting gameplay. Achievements like "Perfect Run - Complete a level without getting hit" should prove to be fiendishly difficult, but it doesn't look like Studio MDHR went crazy and included any achievements for avoiding death completely. It sounds as though you're going to die a lot in Cuphead.

You can pre-order and pre-load Cuphead on Xbox One and Windows 10 right now for just $19.99, and we'll have a full review up to let you know whether it's worth the price of admission.

Why PUBG is a better battle-royale game than H1Z1

$

PUBG

Here's why everyone is playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) — and why you should join them.

When it comes to battle royale games, you really only have two choices that continue to draw in tens of thousands of players: H1Z1 (King of the Kill) and PUBG.

Should you be a newcomer to the genre, or still be logging into H1Z1, here's what sets the two games apart, why PUBG is taking off, even kicking DOTA 2 off the No. 1 position on Steam, and why you should perhaps consider switching.

See PUBG at GMGSee H1Z1 at GMG

The drop

From the get-go, it's clear to see the differences (and improvements) in PUBG to H1Z1 with the initial spawn. Instead of dropping in randomly, everyone is parked on a plane that heads in a random direction across the battlefield. Where you leave the plane is up to you, which then allows you to dive down and activate the parachute to hone in on a particular point of interest.

This makes things interesting, especially in a squad where you have to weigh up options and see where everyone else is dropping in. There's also more action since people are generally clustered together, whereas in H1Z1 you're spread around the area. That said, this isn't to everyone's liking, which is why there are those who prefer the drop in H1Z1.

Strategy

PUBG

PUBG Invitiational eSports.

In PUBG, you really need to take care of movement. Whether you're in an open field or in a destroyed town, there's the possibility of a foe being nearby and this means every step matters. Positioning is vital, setting up aim and taking the killing shot. It's better to pounce than be pounced. It's a much more laidback experience if you choose to play that way. There are various strategies, including holding out or going on the offensive.

Bring in three teammates and this takes the experience to a whole new level. Landing with a few other groups in the same location makes some landings extremely tense. The initial rush for any weapon (be it a pistol or UMP) is followed by working with allies to track and take down those who set foot in your territory. Should you not have the upper hand, it can make POIs like the school to into an exciting bloodbath.

The ultimate PUBG survival guide

There are other aspects, such as being able to only carry a single helmet and limited healing supplies, that make it much more difficult to go in shooting without falling if one isn't careful. H1Z1, on the other hand, isn't all about strategy and allows you to go all-out crazy if that's your preferred playstyle. Land, hop into a jeep and hunt down unsuspecting victims. It's fast-paced and can appear more intense when multiple people are fighting it out. But this is also a downside, as many characters will be seen leaping around like deer running from predators.

Loadouts

PUBG

The weapon and item count in H1Z1 is less than PUBG, and this shows in each playthrough. In the former, you're likely going to be kitted out with a shotgun and AR-15 or AK-47. They're more commonly found and maks gunfights feel more repetitive. PUBG has a larger collection of guns, including more pistols, automatic rifles, machine guns, and even heavy weaponry.

In PUBG, there are also many, many weapon mods that can be installed such as silencers or stabilizers, magazine clips, handles, and sights. This makes it possible to have guns fire and feel different by just throwing in a different modification. Recoil is also a different affair with H1Z1 opting for a more arcade-like system, while PUBG offers actual recoil with automatic modes forcing you to point upwards, and manual modes securing more accurate fire.

Getting around

This is where things get interesting. To this day, H1Z1 still has better vehicle driving mechanics than PUBG, especially when it comes to the incredibly frustrating PUBG motorcycles. Vehicles in both games offer similar features like boost, the ability to run players over, and more. Where the games differ is H1Z1 allows you to have more control over the vehicle but doesn't penalize you for doing insane acrobatics or even leaping out at 90 miles an hour. PUBG will punish you if you attempt to leave the vehicle without stopping first.

Community

Firing up PUBG will get you into a lobby and parachuting down in less than a few minutes. H1Z1 can take anywhere up to five or ten minutes, which is an issue when you just want to get into the action but happen to die early and have to sit and wait. This is largely down to the numbers moving across to other games, with PUBG hitting a million concurrent players at one point. H1Z1 isn't struggling, but there aren't nearly as many players.

Development of PUB is also a positive, seeing how Bluehole has actively listened to the community and taken aboard feedback. As well as rolling out patches and fixing things (which can have the unwanted effect of breaking something else), the team is also working on new weather effects, maps and more.

PUBG

PUBG isn't perfect. No battle royale game is, but it's certainly the best of the bunch for the time being. Here's hoping Bluehole continues to make meaningful patches that really addresses concerns players continue to have with the game. Should you be seeking a battle royale-type survival shooter that has more emphasis on surviving and tactical strategies, PUBG is your game.

If you'd just like to have fun with arcade-like mechanics and fast-action gameplay, H1Z1 is still a solid choice.

Call of Duty: WWII will run at 4K with HDR on Xbox One X

Details on Call of Duty: WWII's Xbox One X enhancements have quietly emerged, promising both 4K and HDR on the console.

Call of Duty, one of the largest shooter franchises of today, is returning to its roots later this year with a new World War 2 themed title. Unsurprisingly named "Call of Duty: WW2," the game moves away from recent trends in the series, by abandoning near-future warfare in favor of a historical setting.

As a part of a marketing deal with Sony, the game's publisher, Activision, has been keen to promote PlayStation 4 (PS4) versions of the game. This has left few details on what to expect from the rival release on Xbox One– let alone the enhancements in store for the upcoming Xbox One X. However, following a recently updated listing from UK retailer GAME (via charlieINTEL), specific details on Xbox One X enhancements have surfaced.

For many titles launching with visual upgrades on Xbox One X, box art designs are being reworked to highlight these features. Icons for both 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) have been spotted on the latest retail packaging, indicating these upgrades will be available at launch on the console. Amidst a close marketing deal with Sony is comes as no surprise Activision has remained quiet leading up to the Xbox One X launch, however, this should be a welcome sight for those picking up the device this November.

In the months since its unveiling Activision has highlighted a slew of changes in the pipeline for Call of Duty: WWII – most notably a shift toward "boots on the ground" combat. When paired with new single player mechanics, multiplayer tweaks and the return of Nazi Zombies, the game is making one of the most inventive games (at least for Call of Duty) in some time.

Are you looking forward to these Xbox One X enhancements? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Fable Anniversary in the works for Xbox backward compatibility

Fable Anniversary in the works for Xbox backward compatibility

Microsoft is actively working on adding Xbox classic Fable Anniversary to backward compatibility.

Fable II and Fable III are already a part of the growing list of Xbox 360 titles that are backward compatible with Xbox One, but you'll soon get to return to the original as well. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed that Microsoft is currently working on bringing Fable Anniversary, a version of the Xbox original that was released for the 360, to backward compatibility.

Fable Anniversary offered an updated take on the popular original. In addition to Fable's RPG gameplay in which every choice had an impact on your character, the Anniversary release completely overhauled the graphics for the Xbox 360 era. New textures and models, a new lighting system, and a new interface were a breath of fresh air for the game. More additions, like achievements, a new save system, and the inclusion of content form the Lost Chapters expansion rounded things out.

There's no word on when to expect Fable Anniversary to be added, but fans of the series will be pleased to know it is indeed being worked on. For now, you can grab the game digitally for $39.99 at Microsoft, or around $23 on Amazon for a physical copy.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 for PC review — A near-flawless fantasy epic

$

Divinity: Original Sin 2 by Larian Studios is a groundbreaking role-playing game (RPG) for Windows PCs that combines a phenomenal pen-and-paper RPG-inspired foundation with beautiful art, gorgeous sound work, smooth performance, and challenging gameplay.

In an age when RPGs are often full of uninteresting fetch quests, lackluster mechanics and the illusion of choice, Divinity: Original Sin 2 feels like a refreshing breath of fresh air. Larian Studios has created an incredibly potent and quality sequel to the original, and it's one that has left its mark on the gaming industry and set the bar for all other future top-down computer RPGs.

See on Steam

Setting and story: Immerse yourself in Rivellon

The world of Rivellon is a living, breathing world that reacts to its inhabitants depending on their actions, and it makes no exception for you.

Rivellon is an immersive and beautiful place, jam-packed with mysteries and wonder. Whether you're exploring a dense forest, investigating a wreckage on a sandy beach, or braving a dark, damp and dreary dungeon, there are numerous ways in which you can interact with your environment. Hidden treasure, secret passageways, and more await those who are willing to delve deep.

Of course, the characters and communities in Rivellon are where the true meat of the setting's depth lies. Choices you make in this world actually matter, unlike many other recent RPG titles. Throughout the story, you'll be faced with several decisions, such as sparing or killing enemies, becoming romantically involved with characters, and helping those in need.

All of these, and every other decision you make, will positively or negatively impact how those around you feel about you, both your companions and other folks you encounter. These changes have a major impact on the way the story progresses.

The game gives you complete freedom to do and go whatever and whenever you want — but be wary, for the game also is never afraid to introduce you to the consequences of your actions. Want to murder an innocent shopkeeper? You are fully able to do so, but nearby guards won't hesitate to draw their blades on you in turn. Think you can haggle with a merchant? Give it a shot, but don't be surprised when they become annoyed of your lowballing.

All of this ultimately helps make Rivellon feel like a real location, one that molds and shapes itself in reaction to your adventure across its vast landscapes.

Gameplay: Turn-based combat, modernized

Enemies in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are disposed of via turn-based, tactical combat.

Sticking true to the Divinity series' Dungeons & Dragons-inspired mechanics, turn-based combat makes a return to the sequel — and it's better than ever.

Using Action Points (AP) that regenerate each turn, both you and enemy forces duke it out on the battlefield. In general, heavier attacks tend to cost more AP and have cooldowns, so spamming the same effective attack each turn is impossible. This forces you to evaluate the abilities of both yourself and your comrades and come up with plans and combinations that will maximize damage done to enemies, while also keeping yourself alive.

In many ways, this system is like a game of chess; think two, three, five moves ahead, and you'll find more success against your foes. Learning the ins-and-outs of the game is challenging at first, but with practice, you'll eventually get the hang of it. That isn't to say that this game ever becomes easy. In fact, it gets exponentially more and more difficult. However, the challenge posed by each new encounter is an absolute joy to experience.

In terms of classes, there are a total of 14 different ones to choose from. Each one offers unique benefits on the battlefield, and all of them have abilities that combine well with other classes. Because of this, it's important that you make sure your party is well-rounded; a diverse set of classes gives you the best chance for success in combat. On top of the class system, there are different species as well. Each one has a unique ability, which may be of help later on.

Lastly, the quests in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are entertaining and interesting. While there are some fetch quests, they're few and far between — and everything in the middle is a treat to experience. Breaking someone out of prison, investigating a murder, killing a specific enemy, and finding a food thief are all examples of the types of quests you'll run into.

Multiplayer: Join forces and take on custom-made challenges

The cooperative multiplayer allows you to team up with three friends to face Rivellon together.

Cooperative multiplayer makes a return appearance in Original Sins 2, except this time, it's vastly improved. Instead of being limited to two players, you can now band together with three other friends for a total of four players working together at once.

In addition, Game Master Mode, a mode in which you can create custom dungeons and other areas, was implemented. This effectively allows you to create an infinite amount of adventures for you and your friends to play. With the Game Master Mode, the only limit to the sheer longevity of Divinity: Original Sin 2 is your own creativity. These can all be downloaded from the Steam Workshop.

Art and sound: The epitome of atmosphere enhancement

The visuals, sound design and music of Original Sin 2 increase the immersion tenfold.

To say that the music and art in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is excellent would be an understatement. Both visually and audibly, the game is flawless. In both calm and combat, the beautiful score accompanies you through every step as you traverse the gorgeous world of Rivellon. Conversations with characters feel meaningful and convincing thanks to the stellar voice work, and each attack and ability have their own unique sounds.

Performance: A masterfully optimized game — with one blemish

Despite small hiccups in frame rate, Divinity: Original Sin 2 runs excellently.

For the most part, the title runs incredibly smoothly, more so than most other new games. However, I did encounter frame rate drops from 80 frames per second (FPS) to about 40 FPS in combat situations where lots of magic was being used and there was a high amount of particle effects on screen. Aside from this, though, the game runs fantastic.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 review: Conclusion

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a polished, well-designed RPG, and through its phenomenal mechanics, astounding art, sound design and fantastic writing, it is sure to revolutionize the modern RPG genre

Pros:

  • Tactical, strategic combat system.
  • Excellent diversity of gameplay through classes and species.
  • Improved multiplayer mode, as well as map editor.
  • Beautifully crafted dynamic world.
  • Stellar music and voice acting.

Cons:

  • Occasional frame rate hiccups.

Halo 3, Halo 4, and more Halo titles come to Xbox One backward compatibility

Halo fans, rejoice: a whole batch of Halo games have just been added to Xbox backward compatibility.

Halo is making its mark in force on the backward compatibility scene today. Microsoft has added four Xbox 360-era Halo games to the Xbox One backward compatible list today, including Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST Campaign Edition, Halo 4, and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

Prior to these additions, Halo's backward compatible presence had been pretty bare, with only Halo: Reach, Halo: Spartan Assault, and Halo Ward on deck. Now, if you own the 360 titles, you can play through nearly every mainline Halo game via backward compatibility on your Xbox One. Of course, you've been able to mostly do this on Xbox One already if you picked up The Master Chief Collection. But if you opted to skip that release, now's your chance to jump back in.

Do note that Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is only playable if you own the disc. All of the others are available and playable digitally, however.

Review: Stellaris 'Synthetic Dawn' DLC on PC lets you take control of robots and wipe out all meatbags

Stellaris

The latest DLC to hit Stellaris is "Synthetic Dawn," which is one of our favorite expansion yet and well worth the $9.99. You'll want this DLC unless ... you're siding with the sloshy meatbags.

Stellaris is an incredible space game for PC and remains one of my all-time favorites. There was one thing missing from the base game, however: robots. Thankfully, the fine folks at Paradox have been working on including synthetic beings as a playable race in Stellaris, and the latest story pack DLC Synthetic Dawn (available now for $9.99) allows you to transform filthy, sloshing meatbags into nothing more than batteries.

But are the robots any good? Keep reading.

Leaving the factory

Stellaris

Even robots require green space to relax.

With Synthetic Dawn installed it's possible to create your very own robotic species. A new category of portraits is available with a total of nine to choose from. We're sure modders will make a few additions here, but the default pack is rather diverse. What makes the synthetic empire entertaining is how much fun you can have with the naming and biography. Talk about the uprising, beep boop.

Three new name lists are present to select from, and there's a dedicated trait list for you to invest four points in. Some of these are generic traits that have been renamed to better fit in with the synthetic theme, while others are dedicated to robots alone (build speed, and upkeep cost, for example). Unfortunately, there's an ommision of a new robotic city design, nor are there ships or flags. What?!

Stellaris

In Synthetic Dawn, it's possible to select Gestalt Consciousness, which is what I'd personally go with. Opting for this ethic will unlock both Hive Mind and the new Machine Intelligence. The latter will allow for the creation of robot pops and unlock access to special, exclusive robotic technologies. The downside is a leader recruitment cost of +100 percent. Ouch.

But it's certainly possible to create a hippy-like tree hugging robotic empire that only seeks peace with each and every other civilization. In my test run, I created an empire of HK-47s to take on the fallen empires and defend the galaxy from external threats.

Robotic simulation

Stellaris

The main thing you have to bear in mind at the start is you do not require food to grow pops. Instead, you'll need to select specific planet tiles and create new pops, which require 100 minerals a piece. Also, robots require energy to maintain, so you'll need to double your efforts in building up a powerful and expansive electricity grid.

The blorg are very friendly creatures.

Another positive about being robots is there's no longer the possibility you'll lose leaders due to old age, since ... well, robots don't technically age. Thus, you'll have more fun building up a squad of some killer leaders. Just be sure to keep an eye on random anomolies and such which still pose a threat to their existance.

Aside from some changes that make the synthetic species feel different to play, the game still plays out as normal. You need to build up fleets, make alliances or rivalries with other civilizations, complete quests, defend yourself against fallen empires, and deal with empire management.

Synthetic Dawn essentially builds on what Utopia added to Stellaris. This is a story pack and not a feature-rich expansion and as such you should expect slight modifications to the game. That said, this story pack allows you to play Stellaris in a whole new way, and that unlocks hundreds of hours worth of gametime, which for $9.99 is pretty good value.

There are even some new voice packs for notifications and alerts in-game — some of which are hilarious. Just keep an eye out for a robotic synthetic fallen empire, which wants to protect all life. But you're not living as a robotic race, are you?

END TRANSMISSION

Stellaris

Overall, as DLC goes, Synthetic Dawn is a great value for the money. You get a whole new species to work with, which isn't too unfamiliar to others already available, but it takes advantage of hive mind-like mechanics. The new traits, technologies and minute gameplay alterations make playing as synthetics unique and interesting, even if you already have more than 1,000 hours clocked.

If you want to play as robots, Synthetic Dawn is a must-buy. It's just a shame (and really odd) that Paradox didn't add robotic ships, cities and flag types. With these added, it would have been perfection.

Pros:

  • Synthetic race.
  • Can make an army of HK-47s.
  • Well priced.

Cons:

  • No robot flags.
  • No robot cities.
  • No robot ships.

Great

4/5

Stellaris Synthetic Dawn is now available for purchase on Steam for $9.99. The base game is also available for about $19.99 (or $39.99 on Steam direct).

Halo timeline: Beginning of the Human-Covenant War and the downfall of Harvest

After the deployment of the Spartan-IIs in 2525, the UNSC began to effectively destroy the Insurrection in the Outer Colonies. However, a devastating alien empire would arrive at the colony Harvest — one that would threaten our entire existence.

In the last article, we covered the rise of humanity in the galaxy, the outbreak of the Insurrection in the Outer Colonies, and the origins of the Spartan-IIs who were created to fight them.

In this article, we're going to take a look at humanity's first contact with the mighty Covenant, what caused the beginning of the war to come, and how the colony world of Harvest became the Covenant's first planetary victim.

February 3, 2525 CE (Current Era): Human and Covenant ships meet for the first time

The Minor Transgression was the first Covenant vessel encountered by humanity.

On February 3 of 2525, the Covenant ship Minor Transgression encountered a human vessel as it was transitioning out of slipspace. Minor Transgression, crewed by Kig-Yar pirates, raided the human ship. Shortly after, the same pirates raided another ship — a UNSC shipping freighter dubbed This End Up.

This did not go unnoticed by a logistical AI known as Sif on the world of Harvest. Reporting the situation to an undercover ONI agent present, Sif effectively alerted the UNSC and Colonial Military Administration (CMA) to the threat's presence.

Expecting that Insurrectionists were the culprits, the ONI agent laid a trap for the pirates; two UNSC marines, Avery Johnson and Nolan Byrne, were to hide on a freighter that was going to be used to bait the pirates into boarding it. Then, the two would surprise and kill the Insurrectionists. The plan worked, although the humans were shocked by the fact that the aliens, not the Insurrectionists, were behind the raids. After killing the Kig-Yar aboard Minor Transgression, Johnson and Byrne returned to Harvest.

Middle of February, 2525 CE: The Rapid Conversion arrives at Harvest

The Rapid Conversion arrived at Harvest in response to the loss of the Minor Transgression.

At some point later in February, the Covenant cruiser Rapid Conversion arrived at Harvest in order to investigate what happened to the Minor Transgression. Hoping to achieve peace and prevent further hostilities, the UNSC attempted to communicate with the Covenant forces via pictogram. The crew of the Rapid Conversion (10 Brutes, 60 Grunts and 100 Drones) opened talks with the humans, but made it clear that their only interest was finding the Forerunner relics that they had detected were there.

Unfortunately, a small firefight between the two sides occurred when a nervous Grunt opened fire on a CMA soldier named Osmo. This immediately caused all negotiation to cease, and the Rapid Conversion's crew withdrew to their ship and returned to orbit.

The Prophets, the Covenant's religious leaders, realized that the relics the Rapid Conversion was detecting on the planet were in fact the humans themselves when a long-dormant fragment of Mendicant Bias that had been aboard the Forerunner Dreadnought awakened and pointed out their misinterpretations to them. Humans were in fact called Reclaimers, or those who were deemed worthy to inherit the Mantle of Responsibility.

The San'Shyuum Prophets were shocked by this revelation, and falsely concluded that the humans were descendants of the Forerunners themselves. Worrying that the Covenant's great empire would turn against the Prophets if they learned this special connection between humanity and the Forerunners, they ordered the species to be exterminated, citing the will of the gods as reasoning.

The Rapid Conversion began to attack the colonial population of Harvest. Though the Covenant ground force was weak, the firepower of the Rapid Conversion brought the majority of the planet to heel. A trap set by the small contingent of human forces there ended up disabling the ship temporarily to allow most of the planet to escape death via freighters, but the ship's crew managed to repair it shortly after. The Rapid Conversion then began to partially glass the planet.

April 20, 2525 CE: CMA Argo investigates lost contact with Harvest

The CMA scout ship Argo was sent in order to figure out the reasoning behind the sudden lack of communication from Harvest.

After all contact from Harvest was lost in February, the CMA sent a small scout ship, the Argo, to investigate.

Upon arriving on April 20, the ship noticed the Rapid Conversion conducting its glassing task. On the planet's surface, a surviving human artificial intelligence attempted to send a message to the Argo to warn it to stay away, but it was too late; the Argo had strayed too close to the Rapid Conversion and attracted its attention. The Covenant ship destroyed the Argo in a matter of seconds.

October 7, 2525 CE: CMA Battle Group 4 engages the Rapid Conversion

When Battle Group 4 arrived at Harvest, they found a planet burnt to a crisp by plasma.

Once contact with the Argo was lost, the CMA went on full alert. Afraid that the planet had been taken over by Insurrectionists and that it was now serving as a major base of operations for them, the CMA at Reach formed a battle group of three ships: the destroyer Heracles, and two light frigates, the Arabia and Vostok. This small force, dubbed Battle Group 4, was sent to Harvest expecting a combat situation.

When Battle Group 4 arrived at Harvest on October 7, they encountered a Covenant super-destroyer, a ship that was seemingly larger and more threatening than the Rapid Conversion. As the battle group attempted to make contact, the Covenant ship abruptly opened fire with laser turrets and plasma torpedoes. Within a terrifying 14 seconds, both the Arabia and Vostok were completely destroyed. Additionally, the Heracles was heavily damaged. By the skin of their teeth, the Heracles managed to re-enter slipspace back to planet Reach — but not before a transmission from the Covenant ship was received:

Your destruction is the will of the gods. And we are their instrument.

November 1, 2525 CE: Heracles returns to planet Reach

The Heracles, barely operational, survives its journey to Reach in order to warn humanity of the Covenant.

Several weeks after the engagement at Harvest, the Heracles arrived at Reach to warn the UNSC and CMA of the Covenant threat.

Immediately, the UNSC went to red alert. The UNSC Navy began to assemble a fleet that consisted of 40 entire ships in order to retake Harvest, the training of future Spartan-IIs was accelerated significantly, and the military forces of the CMA were merged into the UNSC. Determined to show this new foe that they would not go down without a fight, humanity officially began their preparations for a war that, unbeknownst to them, would ravage the galaxy for decades to come.

The first wave of Xbox One X stock is selling out across the globe, top on Amazon US

$

Like the Project Scorpio edition before it, the Xbox One X standard edition seems to be off to a flying start.

The Xbox One X is Microsoft's next console. It's not only the smallest Xbox console ever made, but it's the most powerful, rocking 6 TF of computational power designed to facilitate 4K gaming and VR. We've been hands on a few times at this point, and it really does seem to be the real deal.

Many high-profile commentators have decried the Xbox One X's $499 price point, claiming Microsoft was making the same mistakes that it did with the original Xbox One back in 2013. We live in a world of $1000 iPhones now, however, and it seems that people are willing to splash the cash if they think the product is right.

The Xbox One X is selling out across the globe, with major retailers like Amazon US now listing as "Currently Unavailable" on their respective preorder pages. It's still available to preorder on the Microsoft Store in the US, however, so get in quickly if you're on the fence. The Xbox One X also debuted at the top spot on Amazon US's Best Sellers list.

The Xbox One X is still available on Amazon France and Amazon UK, but Amazon Germany has cleared out its initial allocation. Other US retailers like Target also sold out, but Best Buy US is holding firm for now.

Without hard figures, it's hard to gauge exactly how well the Xbox One X is going to do in the coming months, but these are undoubtedly positive signs. Microsoft has worked hard to demonstrate the value of the Xbox One X, that packs an insane amount of power into a relatively small package. With 4K Blu-ray, 4K Game DVR, 130 games with visual enhancements up to 4K with HDR, and more, Microsoft has put together a winning package that will hopefully resonate with consumers a little more than the OG Xbox One launch back in 2013. Time will tell.

How to find Xûr in Destiny 2: Details on Exotics, location and times (updated)

Everyone's favorite Exotic-wielding vendor, Xûr, Agent of the Nine, has made his return in Destiny 2. Here's how to find him.

Xûr, Agent of the Nine, was one of the most mysterious characters in the first Destiny game, and despite little information surfacing on his background, he's emerged as one of the most iconic in the franchise history. This elusive vendor served as the one-stop shop for guaranteed Exotic items, however, he had an enigmatic twist to his whereabouts.

In Destiny 2, Xûr has made a return, delivering a new wave of gear to eager guardians. Furthermore, information on how the merchant will function in Destiny 2 has surfaced, with some notable changes for returning players.

See at AmazonSee at Xbox Store

Who is Xûr, Agent of the Nine?

Xûr is a mysterious vendor is Destiny 2, providing access to Exotic weapons, armor, and various consumable items, in exchange for a specific currency. While Exotic engrams are a way of securing random drops of high-value loot, Xûr provides a shortcut to specific items, provided they're being stocked.

What makes Xûr unique are his dynamic characteristics, with a temporary appearance every week, in a randomized location. This means that every weekend, Xûr and his inventory will only be accessible for a limited period, in an undisclosed location within Destiny 2's world. To access his goods, you need to track down exactly where he's situated this week, although the location can usually be found pretty easily once eager players post details online.

Xûr also sports a dynamic inventory, with an ever-changing selection of goods to choose from every week. In the first Destiny, Xûr always offered a piece of Exotic gear for each class and a single Exotic weapon, and a similar offering can be expected for its predecessor. Due to his cycling stock of goods, it's recommended dedicated players check back weekly, in case Xûr is stocking an item you're aiming to unlock.

How can you find Xûr in Destiny 2?

Unlike the original Destiny, where vendors appeared exclusively in social spaces, Destiny 2 has begun to spread its vendors across multiple planets. Xûr is among the vendors no longer situated in social spaces, meaning the strange merchant can appear in any four of the game's regions – Earth, Titan, Nessus, and Io. Xûr will now spawn in a planet's Public Sector, located nearby an existing merchant. Xûr appears at 5 a.m. ET / 2 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. UK time on a Friday, before disappearing exactly 48 hours later on Sunday morning.

How do you purchase Exotics from Xûr?

Another major change to Xûr in Destiny 2 is his accepted currency, in a move away from Strange Coins and Motes of Light. Instead, Xûr now provides items in exchange for Legendary Shards, a new premium currency introduced in the sequel.

For now, there are two known ways of securing Legendary Shards. One of the easiest ways of securing them is by dismantling both Legendary and Exotic gear, which provides a guaranteed drop every time. Legendary Shards can also be earned through Faction engrams, however, being randomized drops, this isn't a reliable technique. Pricing for Exotic items is also yet to be confirmed, but due to the nature of Xûr, don't expect this gear to come easy.

Where is Xûr this week? (September 22, 2017)

As expected, Xûr now brings one Exotic weapon and three pieces of Exotic armor. However, in a somewhat surprising move, Xûr is visible on the world map, as a trackable vendor. This makes Xûr relatively easy to find, even without searching for guides beforehand.

To access Xûr's inventory this week, simply log into Destiny 2 and navigate to "The Rig" on Titan. The mysterious seller can be in a building toward the north of the map.

Inside this week's inventory, players have the opportunity to secure the following items. Outside of the four Exotics, no other additional items are available for purchase.

  • The Wardcliff Coil (Arc Rocket Launcher) – 29 Shards
  • Foetracer: Exotic Helmet (Hunter) – 23 Shards
  • ACD/0 Feedback Fence ACD: Exotic Gauntlets (Titan) – 23 Shards
  • Sunbracers: Exotic Gauntlets (Warlock) – 23 Shards

Have you picked up any items from Xûr this week? If so, make sure to let us know in the comments.

Chime in: What's your favorite PC game of all time?

Stellaris

If you had to choose only one, what would be your favorite PC game?

PC gaming has been around for decades, and today there are many, many people playing on Windows. Just take PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), for example. This title recently amassed more than a million concurrent players. That's one game. It's a staggering statistic, but everyone has a favorite game they keep returning to.

This is a difficult question for me to answer, personally. I have many games that hold my attention without issue. Take a fully modded Skyrim install, and I'll inject hundreds of hours. Ark: Survival Evolved is also another game I can pour much time into. Then there's PUBG, League of Legends, Stellaris, and X3: Albion Prelude, just to get started.

If I had to select one, it would be Stellaris simply because it offers me almost exactly what I want from a space strategy game. That and it now offers fully kitted out synthetic races.

Everyone has a favorite

Rockstar has some big Red Dead Redemption news in store next week

Rockstar is gearing up to break its silence about Red Dead Redemption 2 with an announcement next week.

News around Red Dead Redemption 2 has been fairly bare ever since it was first announced, but Rockstar is now teasing an announcement is on the horizon. If you've been eagerly awaiting new bits of information around the highly anticipated game, you'll only have to wait until next week.

Aside from the actual teaser, there's no indication as to what we can actually expect, unfortunately. All Rockstar has released is an image decked out in Read Dead flair that reveals the date of the announcement: Thursday, September 28 at 11 a.m. ET.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally pegged for an autumn 2017 release date, but that was delayed through spring 2018. Other than an announcement trailer and a batch of screenshots shared earlier in 2017, Rockstar has remained relatively mum on the next entry in the popular franchise.

As for the upcoming announcement, it's possible we could see the release of a new trailer. Given that Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't have a firm release date outside of spring 2018, it's also possible we may get something more exact to latch onto as well. In any case, Red Dead Redemption 2 is planned for release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but there's been no word of a PC release thus far. Hopefully, we'll hear much more on the game with next week's announcement.
